Parent support groups for children with speech or language delay

Hi.

I am a newbie to HK, and our 1.5 year old daughter is undergoing speech therapy with a private centre in HK for the past 2 months. Its been an emotional roller coaster rise these past few months, with myself and my family going through the stages of denial, frustration, anger and acceptance. Often I feel like talking to someone who's been through what we are going through.... and so I am writing in to find out if there are any online or in-person parent support groups or forums where parents that have experience with language and speech issues with their children can meet, discuss and support each other. I for sure could use such a community.

I'm confused... your daughter is 1.5yrs old and has been in speech therapy for two months (ie, since age 16mths)? How can a child that young be diagnosed as having speech or language delay? I don't think my first-born said "mama" until he was 20 mths old!

Why do you think your 18mth old has speech delay? What kind of speech are you expecting at that age?

(This is not meant to be confrontational/mean - I'm genuinely baffled that a 1.5yr old can be diagnosed as having speech problems... unless I'm missing some information here.)

First of all thanks to all that responded to my query.... as I read your responses, I realized the mistake I had made - my daughter is 2.5 years old (and not 1.5 years).... Its still early I think, based on what I have read, to establish speech delay in a child at the age of 2.5 yrs, but on the flip side, its better to catch these things early and put some focused effort to help the child progress with his / her speech.... thats anyway, what I seem to understand based on reading stuff on the subject on the internet.

I wouldn't bother either. I went online when my daughter was almost five as I was sure she was dyslexic as all her writing was 'mirror-writing'. Unlike the specialists here who would have perhaps done all sorts of tests etc. , the online specialist asked a couple of pertinent questions then told me not to worry as it was age related and quite common - sure enough, she grew out of it. Children are pigeon-holed at a really young age, nowadays, with all sorts of 'learning difficulties' when its just a matter of them growing up at different rates and us, as parents, allowing them to do so whilst trying to withstand the all-pervasive 'competitive' environment that is HK.

rupalisal, I went through the exact same thing with my daughter except my daughter was a lot older than yours. I had her in therapy at the age of 3 and then 4. The reason being, we were told that there were a few words she was not able to pronounce properly. We were given only a few "sounds" to work on. Mind you, she's bilingual. I remember how she had difficulty pronouncing a few words even during therapy but a few months later, she pronounced them perfectly.

Up until today, I'm not sure if she really had a "learning difficulty" or like heyitsme.hk has pointed out, it is just her growing at a different rate compared to the other "competitive" kids.

Now, at the age of 7, she reads Harry Potter and reads it out loud quite competently when she wants to tell me something about the story.
