Union Hospital / Matilda Hospital
Posted by specks (278 days ago)
Has anyone had any experience delivering at Union Hospital? I have received both negative and positive feedback, but would like other people's opinions. I am booked into Matilda, but live in Kowloon, however my ob has suggested I also book into Union in case I went in labour and it wouldn't make it to Matilda. Obviously Matilda is my first option, but I'm now getting nervous about not making it in time! Thanks in advance.

Dont worry specks, u will make it in time, just get in touch with matilda as soon as u feel some signs and they will guide u immediately, my frd who lives far as well was told to come as soon as she felt some contractions and they monitored the rest there..however it does make sense to just keep a nearby hosptial booked as well just incase..

Thanks, lets hope it is at least in the middle of the night when the traffic is lighter!

I delivered at Union in the end of September. I wasn't happy with some of the nurses who were monitoring me in the labor room as well as the nurses in the nursery. One of the labor room nurses was really rough with the cervical exams and couldn't wait for my contraction to finish before getting me to sign a document.
A huge set-back is that your baby stays in the nursery, which is hard when you want to establish breastfeeding. Some of the nursery nurses weren't very helpful and even condescending, which is quite discouraging when you're trying to learn how to breastfeed. Otherwise, the delivery room nurses and the ward staff and nurses were fine.
Just note that you may have to pay a non-refundable deposit if you book Union. I would say cross your fingers and hope you make it to Matilda!

Thanks bluetapestries, that is the same report I had from a couple of people. I know I can take the easy option and go for the c-section, but unbelievably after a horrible labour first time round, I do want to go natural again if I can. Breastfeeding is the most important thing to me and having my baby with me. It's wrong that we do not have the choice to have our baby with us. I suffered post natal depression after my first, so establishing a good bond and having support is a priority. Thanks so much for the feedback, it has helped with my decision-making.

Glad that I could help. I shared a room with a mother who had a c-section, and she was in a lot of pain afterwards. Yes, you won't encounter pain during the delivery, but your recovery will be really difficult. Good luck with natural birth and hope that you're able to combat the depression this time around.
