35 week ultrasound found a...

"prominent fluid filled space anteriorly, midline in the fetal cranium measuring 2.95cm in length and 1.16cm in lateral width.
The report does state that no other problems exist. Most things I can find on the net talk about enlarged ventricles & posterior fossa problems - but we seem to have no problems there.
Our OB is sending us for a specialist scan tomorrow, and she says not to worry. BUT, we are very worried & know that OB's always say don't worry, even when you should.
Any ideas what this all means? Basically it seems he has fluid in his head that shouldn't be there. I hope is not anthing too scary. We love this little boy already & couldn't bear to have him suffer.
If anyone has been through this please let me know

Dear Blatant,
Quite frankly I have been a bit leery about posting, since I don't want to add to your worry. I imagine others are too. But since you insist...
We did once lose a foetus, but much earlier in the pregnancy, because of fluid in the spine indicative of a chromosomal defect. However this was much earlier, so most likely it is not that.

axptguy38 -thanks for the reply. Yes, we are worried as it seems many problems are related to the Neural Tube Defects - which lead to autism, cerebal paulsy etc (I think). The OB did INSIST that she is not worried about that, And says she feels it is shrinking already & will probably be gone before he is born. She said that she expects no problems and there would be no reason to believe he will have learning difficulties or similar.
According to her the only reason she is telling us is she believes we have the right to know anything in their reports & says the only reason she is sending us to this specialist is for "your peace of mind".
I hope she means all of that, as if she is just trying to console us it would seem like overkill. Surely she would prepare us for bad news if she thought there was going to be any.

Our #2 had a heart murmur in utero. Went away before birth. So the foetus often gets pre-delivery service for production faults.
I am quite certain a good doctor wouldn't say "I expect it will go away" if there is a big risk of somethin grave. That can only backfire.
I will also say that the Internet is a dangerous tool in the hands of non-professionals. It can make you into the worst kind of hypochondriac. "I'm dizzy. According to this website it's one of the symptoms of MS. I must have MS." In other words, try not to read too much stuff online.

Thanks Axptguy. I must admit I am the worst when it comes to internet-diagnosis.
I do agree with you that the OB would be foolish to play it down so much if she thought things were dire. She is one of the top OB's in HK and has a reputation as being quite blunt.
Will let you know once back from our tests.
Cheers

Hey, I have a grin from ear to ear!!!!!!!
The scan yesterday showed a 'false void' apparently. Happens at times I am told. The specialist we saw today said is nothing to worry about & an MRI would show there is nothing unusual. He called it an artefact, as in the ultrasound showing something that isn't really there.
Thanks for concern & support!!!!!!!!

That's great news!
I read your post last night, then I googled and was worried for you. I am a compulsive internet surfer as well and invariably over worry as a result of my 'research'.
Now all you have to do is get excited about your little baby boys arrival!
Congratulations!

Gabriella, Thank you. I mentioned to the Dr that I can not keep away from self-diagnosis on the net, and he said he can't blame us for doing, but all we will do is end up with more worry.
My Mum's sister is a nurse & she reckons many nurses become huge hypocondriacs as they have all the text book cases come in, and end up with at least one of the symptoms themselves.
Very excited now about the arrival of our boy. Also found out today that cancer surgery on my father in law 2 weeks ago was a huge success. The cancer has not spread to lymph nodes at all & other organs are free as well.
A good day!!

Fabulous day! It's a shame you can't have a champagne :)
Good luck with the birth - it's all going to be ok! So get excited, go and have a lovely dinner or pamper yourself.

What a relief!
You can have half a glass of champagne. ;) Or do something else to celebrate. As Gabriella says, perhaps a lovely dinner.

Blatant, I'm so happy to hear all is well and it was a false alarm.
When I delivered my daughter, I met a lady who found fluid in her little boy's brain. She cried her eyes out when it was diagnosed - this was right after delivery to. They had counsellors comforting her. However, 14 days later, he got better (without any surgery) and they went home.
