pumpkin pie
Posted by georgie10 (870 days ago)
Is pumpkin pie sweet or does it taste like pumpkin you would cook with a roast dinner? Sorry if I've offended anyone with this question as I am an Aussie and have no idea about such things. Any recipes? Thanks.

pumpkin pies are sweet. You can either start with a pumpkin, cook it, mash it, strain it, or go the easy way and use canned pumpkin puree such as Libby's. Here's a recipe: http://pie.allrecipes.com/az/ClssicPmpkinPi.asp

Here's a couple. Haven't tried yet - need to get a decent oven first:
Sweet Pumpkin Pie
Preheat the oven to 165°C
Steam or microwave pumpkin (so it's soft enough to mash and not leave hard pieces in the pie).
Blind bake short crust pastry in a round pie dish.
In a bowl beat two eggs and 1/4 cup of brown sugar
Add a 1/2 tsp of allspice
1/2 tsp of cinnamon
1/4 tsp of ground ginger
1/4 tsp of ground cloves
2 tbsp of orange juice zest of the orange
Mix all together with the pumpkin pulp.
Pour into cooked pastry base, spread out and place in pre heated oven for approx 40 mins.

Never fail pumpkin pie:
2 cups cooked pumpkin - smashed or pureed well
One can SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK
2 eggs
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp each: nutmeg, ginger and salt.
Mix all together Pour into uncooked pie crust. Bake in pre-heated 215C oven for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temp to 180C and bake additional 35 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted comes out clean.
Cool. Served with whipped cream.

Pumpkin pie is like a custard pie but with pumpkin in it. It's sweet, mildly spiced (cinnamon etc) and has a bit of pumpkin taste but not like roast pumpkin.

Cool! Thank you for the fruitful comments above. I am a big fan for pumpkin... ate a lot in US!! What a pity that Hong Kong doesn't sell it!
