can you freeze a frosted cake

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how to prepare and decorate a cake for a friend who's birthday will be 10 days into our trip back to the States. I'd like to do a doll cake for her and leave it in the freezer so her parents can grab it out on her birthday. Easy enough to freeze an undecorated cake, but I don't think Icing will freeze well. Maybe fondant? Just wondering if anyone's done this successfully. I'll be contacting our local baking supply shop this week too.

Icing works fine. Make an ice cream cake! In Canada, Dairy Queen makes them and they are very popular. Check online for recipes. Basically, just pack ice cream into a container (layered is nice...different kinds) and when frozen, run hot water on the container and tip it out. Freeze again. Frost quickly and freeze again.

cool Idea thanks, I have made them in the past and was considering that, but I think she'd really like a Barbie Doll cake. (could do that as Iced cream I guess) Actually, I looked into it a little on line. seems that buttercream frosting can be frozen. Fondant box said it's not recommended.

You can freeze an iced cake if the icing is made from butter and sugar - if there is cream it works as well but does seperate a bit on thawing. Have done it many times and always comes out OK - although you may get a 'freezer' taste to it.
