Favourite Restaurant in Hong Kong?

Very difficult to select one but personally I am a huge Pho addict and the best Pho is to be had is at Pho Saigon on Hennessy Rd (across from the CC Wu Building) - I try to get there when I visit Hong Kong.

Pho in Hong Kong is not good. The beef is not tender, the soup is too sweet and doesn't have enough star anise flavor, the herbs are not fresh enough, and the rice noodles are often overcooked. This covers, Cafe Loco, Saigon, Nha Trang, Vietnam Station...Out of all of them, Nha Trang is probably the least bad.

Inn Side Out at Sunning Plaza in CWB is a regular haunt - consistently good American-style food (hot wings, potato skins, burgers, ribs); for PROPER restaurant experience (high price tag), we love authentic italian at Isola in IFC - great celeb and people watching environment too.

Just discovered a really good Japanese Robata Grill restaurant: Niku, on Shin Hing Street in Noho. # is 3485-1850

To be honest, the food isn't that great in Hong Kong. Maybe, La Pampas Argentinian place for genuine good food plus some of the local Chiuchow places.

I have to agree with LGMV. I find the food in Hong Kong is generically boring, too often either tuned to the American or the local Honkie palate, which is hardly a good thing.
HK is not my favourite food location, I prefer to cook at home, beats being constantly disappointed, when I am paying for someone to cook, that will amaze me, not just fill my tummy ..
France, Italy, Greece and Melb Aust are still my fine food faves, especially at the cheap to mid end of normal places to enjoy good cooked food..
The best Canto food I have ever eaten in the world, Melbournes Flower Drum, nobody in HK is a patch on that restaurant. Maybe, if they slowed their kitchens down here a bit, invested the correct amount of time to prep dishes authentically, instead of just getting it 70% right, and cooked in the fastest possible time. The speed in which HK kitchens work, hinders any chance of food ever being anything but generic, and its blindingly obvious if you have comprehensive cooking experience.

Sorry but you are full ofsh*t. Don't even blame America for the way food is here. American's didnt colonize this place for 100 some odd years. Im sure there are more Europeans than there are Americans here anyway.

Umm, I wasn't blaming America.. Where did I state that ?
Ever eaten in Tokyo or Seoul ?
Consistently blows Hong Kong AWAY, they have their hospitality act together there. Italian food there tastes like it does in Italy :).
bargoban, my post had nothing to do with colonialism , but had everything to do with attitude, doing things better, pleasing the paying customer with what's presented on the plate.

Things are aimed at the American customer or the local Hong Konger. Thats where I got that idea from. So thats why I say dont blame em when its the British House of rule.
I brought up the brits because you said the food is tuned towards the American or HKger. Hows that when America hasnt influenced this place nearly as much as Europe has? Thats all im saying.

The best restaurant in Hong Kong is Cru in Sai Kung.
Other than that it is in my house espeically when I do a Sunday roast with Yorkshire puddings. It just can't be bought.

chinese food here is amazing, of course esp the canto and shanghai styles but not only them. others asian cusines also not bad at all, esp japanese and thai. the western food sucks mostly. but then western food is boring and banal and dull anyway, no matter where.

Most places have to serve rubbish in order to make the rent plus a bit for themselves. That's why the food in the hotels is quite good.

I would say HK food (and everything else) is more influenced by the US despite its British colonial roots - because, let's face it, what mode of fashion in the world DOESN'T the US have a monopoly on? Especially in such a money-hungry consumerist breeding ground as HK, where the main exposure to the western world is American television. Don't get defensive about it - it's just the truth.
And also let's face it, who would imitate Brit food...?
The problem is, Hong Kong imitates it so very badly. It might look like a burger, but the you realise the bun is sweet, the beef patty is pork cheek, the cheese is yellow mayonaise...
That said my favourite burger "was" the recently closed down Atomic Patty in LKF :(

For Pho - definitely not as good as Toronto or Melbourne (frgetting Vietnam for now) - places that I would recommend are the Pho place across from 298 Computer mall in Wan Chai (forgot the name) and Nga Trang in Central is not bad.
For burgers - surprisingly the Pro Burger joint by escalator has good, cheap burgers - big fat patties and greasy as heck. Dukes - too rich, too $$$. Have not tried Monster Burger on Stanley Street. Dan Ryan's premium angus burger is not bad.
