European Travel Hubs

I want to stop off in Europe on the way to the USA this summer, and I'm having trouble finding a low cost ticket. Can anyone tell me what are the cheapest cities to fly to in Europe? I mean like the biggest travel hubs with the greatest number of cheap, international flights. Interested in both northern and southern Europe as possible stop-off points.

I did not see this post earlier, London starting point then joining a group that travels around the areas mentioned.

Ages ago, my family and I joined such tour, took us two~three weeks I think.

Try Going Places website, but not sure whether the agency still has the same name.
