My friend and I are planning a DIY tour in Sai Kung next month. Any recommendations where to go aside from the Pak Tam Chung Trail?

If you are headed into the country park, grab a map and take a trip out to Tai Wan or Tai Long Sai Wan beaches, glorious places, clean water and great scenary.
Alternatively for an authentic outing, take the bus to Wong Shek Pier (from Sai Kung town) and then the regular ferry can take you to Tap Mun (Grass Island) for some great chinese food followed by a walk around the island.
If the air is clear (like the last few fabulous weeks) take a hike up to the top of Ma on Shan, the views are awesome.
With any of the above mentioned, choose your time of day, plenty of water, a phone and sunshade is recommended in this heat.
Have fun, Sai Kung is a great place for outdoor adventures.

teamnz, your info is much appreciated. could you also tell me where to grab a map? i normally enjoy hiking but not in this heat, is there a way to get to one of the beaches without having to hike there?

Hi Mangotango, the maps are in Protrek (google them) and most outdoors stores in HK (Mongkok), fortunately or unfortunately, the only way to get to these beaches is with a walk, the great news is thats what keeps these places so clean and so special.
Tap Mun has no walking involved, but offers no beach.
Tai Long Sai Wan, you can take a taxi or bus into the country park right to the beginning of the trail, then the walk is 45min - 1hr dependent on how fast or slow you walk.
Send me a PM if you want more info.
Have fun, its a great part of HK.

I am interested in hiking to Trio Beach. Where in Sai Kung does the trail start, how long does it take and how difficult is it?

There are a few beginning routes that lead to Trio (Sham Sing Wan)it is reached from Che Keng Tuk road, or trails leading out from the top of Tui Min Hoi off of Hong Kin rd behind the Tui Min Hoi Fishermans Housing Estate, to get there follow the promenade coast line from Sai Kung to Tui Min Hoi and take the stairs up to the little church on top of the hill that overlooks Sai Kung or get off the bus and start at the Lions Recreation Centre it takes about 30 - 40 minutes. You're bound to see someone along the way that can tell you should you get lost. There is also a Kaido that runs from the Pak Sha Wan pier for $5 a head each way.
