Ryokan + private Onsen Japan

Hi
Does anyone have any idea how ryokans work and which areas are generally the best?

I would prefer a private onsen if possible.

If travelling to Tokyo, you can choose between Hakone and Izu area would be nice. Ask the travel agent for room with private bath, more expensive though.

Get there by shinkansen/bullet rain for the experience.

Ryokan are shared-bath accomodation, very basic, but cheaper.
Visit Kamakura and Yokohama on the way.

We stayed in a ryokan in Tokyo across the street from Tokyo Stn. Hotel Yaesu-Ryumeikan. You can book it on-line: www.ryumeikan.co.jp/yaesu_e.htm

It is basic, but clean.
