are you talking about the finish airline? then it would have been around since the dawn of time I suspect - as long as any of them! As it is a pretty civilised country (Finland i mean) - I would expect the airline is absolutely fine to fly with.. Tho suspect you would end up going through Helsinki in most cases?

You could do worse than go through Helsinki!

Finnair has been around since the 1960s or even earlier and is oneworld carrier. very reputible!

from Wikipedia: The airline has not had a fatal accident since 1963, nor has any severe damage to its aircraft occurred since then, ranking it the second-safest airline of all time (behind Australia's Qantas).
Pretty good i'd say!!!

The main advantage of Finnair for flights to Europe with a stop (say, to Stockholm or Berlin) is that Helsinki lies between here and there. For example, Stockholm-HK is about 13½ hours on Finnair and about 17 on BA since you have to backtrack if you go through London. Also, their relatively small hub means you'll never have to run three miles to make your connection like at Heathrow or Frankfurt. Typically you only have to walk a couple of gates away.
As for Finnair, as mentioned they have been around for quite a while and are what I would consider a solid airline. The service is nothing spectacular.
On a side note:
Not saying that Finnair isn't safe (they are), but comparisons based on fatal accidents are based on rather flawed statistical methods. If nothing else they typically don't take into account flying hours or average flight time. Just look at Concorde, which went from the "safest" airliner ever to the least safe ever. The assumptions behind the statistics are bad.

"My problem started before landing in Helsinki. Before landing, the pilot has said that some flight to other European coutries will be delayed. What I did not expect was the 5-hr delay, without even any notification!!! I tried asking the ladies at the counter if they at least have any idea on when we can leave for our destination, and all they could say was NO..."
These things happen of course, but I hope you haven't been put off Finnair. Their on time record is typically quite high, mostly due to an uncongested hub (unlike Heathrow, CDG, Frankfurt).
"I was impressed at first when I got the itinerary from my agent that it only takes about 9 hours from HK to Helsinki. "
This is the magic of Finnair. On a regularly projected world map, the route looks like a detour. But break out a globe (or the Great Circle Mapper http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=hkg-hel-edi%0D%0A&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=red&PATH-UNITS=mi&PATH-MINIMUM=&SPEED-GROUND=&SPEED-UNITS=kts&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=navy&MAP-STYLE=ortho) and it's easy to see how Helsinki is right in the correct path.
