Is it safe to travel to India?
Posted by gmhopkinsfan (361 days ago)
We have trip to India planned for January. We already have our airline tickets. The very recent attacks in Mumbai is making me think twice about pushing through with our travel plans. On the one hand, the terrorists would have succeeded if we don't go. On the other hand, should we risk our lives just to prove a point? And can we enjoy the trip if we are constantly worrying about our safety?

i think it will be fair to wait and see. hopefully will all blow over by then. are you going to Mumbai or elsewhere? I would not go to Mumbai right now, but i suspect it will be fine in Jan. But i would not cancel the trip if it is for other parts of india.

it's a very sad situation but terrorrist attacks are a reality in most parts of the world now. having said that wait and watch for some time - things would be clearer in a day or two. january should be ok.

I am planning a trip to India in January and this incident has minimal impact on my decision.
The way I put such things in perspective is to ask how many people were are over by cars or died in other accidents in India in one day?
Using that benchmark I go to India - I do not go to Iraq....

Hub has just returned from Mumbai (5 day business trip) - noticed a lot more 'security' in the hotel compounds. Landed in BKK Monday night and back to HK later that evening - missed the 'lock down' in BKK and had a safe trip out of Mumbai.
We were in India last year Delhi, Jaipur, Agra.. Ed is right. Although their was noticable heightened security at all the tourist hotspots - you would not belive how many road accidents we saw on our drive from Delhi to Agra - and one electrocution!!!! Madness I tell you, Maddness!!
Must be that angel on his shoulder!!

Thank you everyone for your thoughts on this issue. It's helping me look at the situation in Mumbai with a more balanced perspective.
ldsllvn, we start our trip in Delhi, then on to Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur and finally, Goa. We just need to spend one night in Mumbai to catch our flight back to Hong Kong.
shuchising, I agree with your recommendation. We are taking a wait and see position at this point.

Good to wait and see...I don't think it is wisdom for that risk...

Obviously the terrorists have achieved what they wanted - distract Pakistan by having to deal with an angered India so that US doesnt get a free hand in Afghanistan. Poor foreign guests and Indians who had to bear the brunt.
The situation is under control, the siege is over. I talk to my friends all over India - they are all very distraught but life is going on outside of mumbai.
Even mumbai dwellers have returned to work - just got off a conference call with one of our offices there.
The cities that you have mentioned should be ok, enjoy your trip.
