A must do for Beijing is the Jinshanling- Simatai Great wall Trek. The Badaling Great wall section, normally seen by most tourists to Beijing, is too well restored for it to be of any great historical significance. The Simatai trek takes around 4 hours to cover 12 KMs and is considered medium trekking. plenty of Tours from operators such as Tourdesign, e tours, are available on the Internet for the same.
The Other must sees, depending on time available, are the forbidden city for which you can hire audio equipment ( obviating the need for a guide) at around 40 Yuan, and the Tiannanmen square.
Shopping, not just for buying, but for testing your bargaining skills too, is to be done at the Silk Market. This was an open street market earlier but was a few years back shifted into one large building. It sell every thing from shoes, dresses, Bags, goggles, Jackets , coats etc. Normally evenings, after 7.30 PM is the best time to go as Bargains are quicker to conclude and more favourable as sellers try to meet some kind of day end targets. It is better to select one large shop offering a variety of things so that you can drive a hard bargain in which the seller stands to lose more by not coming down to your suggested price. The Most common suggested price is around 1/8th or 1/10th of the asking price. If the response is Quote ' you will get me killed' Unquote. It means that your suggested price is more or less acceptable. Otherwise they just turn away in disappointment and stop looking at you, an indication that your suggested price may be too low.
Hope the above is useful
