Going to visit BJ in late March. Is Wangfujing a good area to stay? Going to hit most of the famous attractions like Forbidden city, Tiannamen Square, summer palace etc.

Wang Fujing is downtown area in Beijing, suggest you stay at Novotel Peace Hotel (4 star) or North Garden Hotel (4 star) close to Forbidden city and Tian'an Men Square.

We have stayed in Leo's Hostel which is within short walking distance to Forbidden City, Tiananmen and they run cheaps tours to the Great Wall. It is clean, very cheap and in my opinion better than a five star hotel as you are immersed in the culture as you walk out of the hostel. The food in the hostel seems to be catered for westerners and the menu was ok, again very cheap. The hostel is an old Hutong, although I was there 2 years I don't know how much it has changed. The rooms are secure. Staff friendly and all speak English. You will have to goggle Leo's Hostel BJ. I hope this helps.

Why not stay in the Hutong area? It is the best way experiencing Beijing. I have suggested some friends to stay at Sanbao youth hotel, it is a beijing style quateryard hostel, in Drum and Bell tower area, which is very close to Nan Luo Gu Xiang, which is a famous alley for cafes and restaurants. They got all there, Indian, Chinese, western, etc. Some little cafes on the roof too, it's pretty nice. I think they charge 238 RMB for a twin room, and provide airport pickup service too if you pay 180 RMB extra.
