Places to stay in Ho Chi Minh
Posted by dizzyhytes (262 days ago)
Hi, I am transitting for a night in Ho Chi Minh city on a Sat night and would appreciate advice on decent hotels to stay in. I would need is to be in a safe area near the centre of town so I can walk out and get some great street food. I am female so don't fancy taking too many risks...
Also are there any good western sports bars where I could go watch some rugby or football in the evening?
Thanks and regards
Kathy

Hi Kathy,
I travel and stay in HCMC very often, as I do volunteer work in Hoi An.
I usually stay 1 to 3 nights and stay at the Metropole Hotel on Tran Hung Dao Street metropole@libertyhotels.com.vn They are a little more expensive than others - approx. $75. to $110. US a night, including breakfast
Second choice is Dai Nam Hotel on same street, closer to Ben Thanh, dainamhotlel@hcm.fpt.vn - they are less expensive and then,
Thanh Long Hotel - clean and safe just very basic for around $20 US a night (I haven't stayed there for 3 years now) ksthanhlong@saigonnet.vn
The first two I have stayed at a few times last year.
As long as you stay in District 1 (all these are) it is touristy and lots of Western people around.
Great food at the night market.

A lot depends on your transit visa / arrangements. Your carrier will know the restrictions - sometimes your passport is held by immigration and a temporary visa issued. They also 'suggest' hotels you might use near the airport.
"Downtown' is about a USD$6 ride from the airport and 30 minutes.
A nice hotel, in District 1 - the better part - is the Indochine on Hai Ba Trung, Check their web site < www.indochinehotel.com/ >. My office in HCM is almost opposite this property and I am sure you will find it amenable to your needs. BOOK EARLY! (It's popular)

Indochine Hotel - dropping into HCM for the weekend - definitely book this hotel early as the best rooms are not available this weekend. The standard room is good compared to other mini-hotels but not great...
For great value for money I would suggest this hotel on the riverfront http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/sgnbr-renaissance-riverside-hotel-saigon/
It's amazing how much this city has changed in the few years that I have not been - but one thing remains the same - went to Lemongrass last night - as usual the food was superb!

This used to be correct but it faces a very noisy, 24 hour operation of trucks departing the docks and heading towards Binh Tan. On the 'quiet' side of the hotel you face a boring office building.
A newly refurbished hotel, within about 150 metres is the LINH - a real treat, just around the corner from the Indochine.

I've just come back from HCM and stayed at the Majestic Hotel (district 1) had a lovely big room, great location and great breakfast.
We ate at the Vietnam House, just down the road from the hotel, lovely pho. Also ate in Temple Club - fabulous food and great interior. The last night we ate Lemongrass, also good but have to say Temple Club was the best !
