Hi Fishbone - I too am looking at Krabi for a holiday and looked up the Sofitel on TripAdvisor. Lots of comments there, some good some bad. Also looked at hotel website and was puzzled by the fact that, despite the name, there's no mention of a golf course.

I have a huge problem with Trip Advisor... I used it 3 or 4 times and based on recommendations booked hotels that turned out to be utterly horrible and which did not resemble what was recommended in the slightest
I suspect that most of the hotel recommendations are posted by the hotels themselves... as someone in the industry recently put it to me, how many people are going to be bothered to go to a web site after staying in a hotel and post a recommendation - on the other hand, if they had a bad experience there's a very good chance they will post negative comments about a hotel to warn others...

I have used them many times and found them brilliant for advice, you do have to read between the lines and look at the aspects most important to you. You also have to bare in mind that everyones standards are different so what one person might be very happy with another may not. Only been disappointed once out of roughly 30/35 trips in the past 4 years.

Can someone comment on Golden Beach Resort in Krabi too. What I read in Trip Advisor about it seems nice, would like to double check. Thanks.

You should note that hotels in Krabi can be quite far from the main beach, which in istelf isn't really all that nice.
You might be better off staying in Raylai (sp?), just around the corner.
Thoroughly recommend booking a longtail boat for a day and going island hopping. Great food on a sandspit on Chicken Island.
