The usual culprits are on the list e.g Thailand, Indonesia- yet in reality, how dangerous are these places in regards to personal safety? Furthermore, do you think such generic advice protocols lead to generalisations by the public at large?

Frankly speaking, I would feel much safer when walking around Jakarta or Bangkok than I do walking around in my native city in the U.K.

The problem with Thailand is the insurgency in Southern part, not Bangkok or Phuket.
Most embassies recommend you not to go.
Australian Embassy:
"We strongly advise you not to travel at this time to the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla or overland to and from the Malaysian border through these provinces due to high levels of ongoing violence in these regions, including terrorist attacks and bombings resulting in deaths and injuries on an almost daily basis. Since January 2004, more than 3,400 people have reportedly been killed and many more injured, including a number of foreigners. If you are in these provinces, you should consider leaving. "

According to the Maily Mail, annual British Crime Survey figures from the police show that "A knife attack [takes place] every 4 minutes; 130,000 per year." And that's just knife crime.

I think that generally these travel warnings are a way for governments to cover their butts.... they put general warnings on all locations that have even the slightest chance of a terrorist attack so that they can point to that if something happens...

Love it, Thailand and Philppines are on the list, Afghanistan is not. Guess where I'm going for my next holiday. This stuff is just c**p. Keep up with the news and make your own decisons - and if you can't, then do what nanny tells you.
