Chiang Mai Hotel Recommendations, please
Posted by marigold (576 days ago)
Can anyone recommend a good place to stay in Chiangmai (4-star accomodations or so) for under $100USD/night. I prefer to be within a short hop of the town centre.
Thanks in advance.

There is a big diff betw 4* vs 5* hotels pricing. Their 4* hotel ratings is closer to 3* . The international chain of hotels are situated out of the town area. eg. Four Seasons.
If you are looking at staying close to the night bazaar happenings, then either Royal Princess or Sheraton hotel, but go for the deluxe room if possible.
Royal Princess is next to the night market and Sheraton is 10 mins away. There are plenty of cheap 3-wheeled cabs to move around.
As usual, check out the room and ask for a change if not up to expectation.

If you go, forget about the hotel food. Other than Thai food, you can check out their small restaurants around the nightly bazaar - offer Japanese and German food which are really good and inexpensive. ( Decent meal, minus wine is a range of HKD 100-200 for 2 pax)
If possible, take time to check out the local Sunday Market, around the moat area, start around 6pm-8pm, diff from the nightly market. The 3 wheelers will take you there for <HKD2. This is where you can get specialized goods from the village craftsmen.

Tamarind Village, right in the middle of the old city, if you book it with travel agency for pre-paid rate,it is around US$100 per night including breakfast for a double room.

I second Tamarind Village - lovely, a bit more authentic on the east side of the walled town - easy access to eveywhere and the restaurant has great food too.

Everything that DSS said was pretty much true-- big, big difference between 4 & 5 Star hotels with the 4 star being closer to the 3 star range. Will definitely try the Tamarind the next time (was fully booked this time). Chiangmai is about 40% cheaper than Bangkok for pretty much everything except the 5 star hotels. It is a quiet, relaxing place for a long weekend.
thanks all,

I go to Thailand regularly and like to alternate the avail accomodation.
The non-international hotels are graded by local stds and due to the high tourists traffic, they are run down pretty fast.
Another value for money stay, is a family run studio apartment block which is safe, air con, attached bathroom, super clean ( about 500 Bhts or HKD 100 per nite). The owners' house is within the walled compound. It is about 10-15 mins ride from the night market. This is a good option if one is not going to use the hotel facilities.
