Mirena
Posted by yklc (439 days ago)
I'm already fed up with all those pills and wanna try out Mirena IUD. Does anyone know where I can get it done (in HK / KLN), how reliable it is and how much it cost ? Also, will my partner notice anything from it when he enters ? Thanks in advance for your help !

I have had a mirena in for 18 months now and wouldn't consider any other form of long term contraceptive. We are moving to HK in the next two months and am also interested as to places that insert the mirena as it needs to be checked every 12 months and replaced after 2 years. It is very comfortable and I don't even notice it is there. My husband dosen't even notice anything during sex. I think it takes a few months for your body to adapt to having it in but after this time it is really worth the cost. As for reliability? I am not pregnant yet and my father-in-law that is a GP says it is as close to steralisation on a temporary basis as it is possible to get. It cost me around 600 New Zealand Dollars, don't know what it would cost elsewhere.

It can be put in by Dr Lucy Lord who works both in central or southside of the island, cost was around $5,000 including antibiotics, pap smear and location ultrasound. Took only a few minutes. Had two lots of Implanon for three years each and now trying this (had it around 1 year). Don't know it is there although you are supposed to check every now and then. Not sure if you could get it on your health insurance plan. Possibly you could get it done more economically at other surgeries.

The HK family planning clinic is able to do the IUD insertion - they are very thorough and professional - even doing a breast examination at the time.
I had previously had one through a Gyno in Hk and the experience was not good - the HK Family planning were a number of steps above in terms of 'bedside' manner. The cost was also way cheaper than the private doctors at $1200. Need to be replaced every 5 years, and as a bonus may reduce your periods to virtually nothing.
Here is the website with prices for the different service

Highly recommend them. They also do pap smears and other womens health stuff for a fraction of the cost of GP's and Private gyno's.
All the doctors and nurses are female and speak English very well.

I did mine through the HK Family planning Clinic in Wan Chai. $1450 for all the prep work/check up and insertion.
Had it done in Jan 2006. Have had 2 instances of breakthrough bleeding since then. Insertion was not that painful and I have had no other problems with it.
I love it. I'll get another one in 3 years when this one needs to come out. Best birth control I have ever had.

I had just the opposite experience as the others, it caused bloating, weight gain and many other side effects. If you do not do well with other birth control methods...don't consider this one. It caused a great deal of suffering for 6 months...but again...I had side effects with the pill as well.

@dbrongie: It seems that women who have had problems with BCPills have had problems with the hormonal IUDs. I never did, do the Mirena worked well for me.
@exeter: My husband has said that, at times, he can feel the strings as well, but not all the time. He says it's not painful or uncomfy, but sometimes, he can really feel them.

All your responses are very helpful. Thanks a lot ! I just had a conversation with a few friends and one of them told me that she'd tried it and got infected ? She's not allowed to use mirena anymore. That sounds quite horrible, though...

That's pretty rare. I think the problem is that we hear more about the BAD experiences and not the good ones. Most people I know have had no problems.

True Tia..everyone has a horror story about the injectable contraceptive Depo too. I had it for over 15 years and never had a single problem or side effect.

Dr. Dawkins inserted mine at the Matilda. I think it was about $5000 for the Mirena, doctor's fees and hospital fees. I have only had it in for about 45 days. Lots of spotting during the first month--but the doctor warned me about that so I was expecting it. My husband has not noticed anything poking him back, as sometimes the "thread" do and need to be shortened or bent back. I have not experienced any bloating or weight gain. So far I am optimistic. It is really nice not to have to take a pill every day.

I had my first mirena about 6 years ago and had it removed about two months' ago...which was a year overdue. I had no problem at all since day one and I had it inserted for medical reason...my fibroid was causing the bleeding and Mirena with the time released hormones was helping with the bleeding almost immediately due to my fibroid. I am my heavy menses again for the past two months since the Mirena was removed and I have arranged for a new one to be inserted tomorrow (Monday) by my Gynae. It is going to cost me about HK$3500 for everything. I would highly recommend it.

Bea, if it was removed a year late, was it still working at preventing prenancy?

I've had the Mirena for the last 5 years and it was heavenly... no periods, no mood swings, no side affects after the first few months (and even than only a little spotting). It lasts for 5 years with the hormone part and in theory as long as it's in "iud" wise... but I don't know that I would count on that to prevent pregnancy. I know that 3 months before mine "expired" I started to get all the symptoms I get when I went off the pill (which I didn't like since I got so many of the side affects- which I don't with the mirena because it's such a smaller dosage and it continuous).
A vast majority of my friends had it put in after their final child was born and none of them have had any health issues. Three of us has husbands who could initially "feel" the strings but all of us just went back in and had the gyn cut the strings short and now it's not a problem. You are SUPPOSED to use your fingers to feel for the strings once a month to ensure it's in place, likewise if you ask for them to get tucked up they can check using an ultrasound every 6 mos. From what my gyn and those in my family who are doctors have said, it's pretty much unheard of to have a iud "slip" out if it's put in correctly.
What I'm looking for is a good gyn in Kuala Lumpur to take this one out an reinsert a new one (I really miss those hormones getting rid of the mood swings and periods!). I would prefer a woman but if you have a man you really like I'd appreciate the recommendation. Also if you have any idea on the cost to do it over here.
