Can anyone help me?
My daughter has really bad scalp eczema and nothing seems to be working from the medicated shampoos, natural shampoos, seeing the doctor etc....Anyone know of something that could possibly help?
Thanks

I suffer from psoriasis and have used all the regular polytar/scalp softening/steroid lotions and shampoos.
What I found really helped is Aesops scalp treatment serum (cedar and sage) combined with its sage shampoo. It did what no prescription mediacation had been able to. It is designed for people with conditions that merit prescription treatment but who prefer not to go down that route.
They have a shop on Lyndhurst Terrace. Its a tiny bottle and a bit pricy but it really worked wonders(and a little goes a long way). Its worth a try I would say.
I am in now way connected to Aesop nor have anything to gain from this recommendation. I am just a sufferer of a chronic skin condition who knows how tough it can be.

Scalp eczema is a very specific condition, you should consult with your doctor to verify that she indeed has it.otherwise by trying different products, you risk irritating her scalp without addressing the condition. If you do want to try something, most doctors reccomend Nizoral Shampoo, You can find it in Watsons, But please check whether it is too strong for her age.
Hope this helps

Thanks Pumpkin - I will definitely try that. Is that the only place it is available?
Philip George - yes it is definitely scalp eczema as it has been diagnosed by several doctors and Nizoral is not working. Any other suggestions?

Not sure where else Aesops product is available...google for their website - its very informative..I imagine there are concessions in other malls around town.

Pumpkin, which doctor would you recommend for scalp problems. My scalp is very irritated and more like 'burning scalp syndrome'. Haven't found anyone who can treat it yet. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I can highly recommend the dermatologist at Quality Healthcare in Admiralty. You do need to phone for an appointment, it is $500 for a consultation but of the many many derms I have ever seen, I have never known one to spend such quality time really listening and understanding a patient...He is who you get referred to by many of the expat oriented GP's in Central.

I do not know if you have researched the following:From Wikipedia:
Light Therapy
Light therapy using ultraviolet light can help. PUVA, UVB, and Narrow Band UVB are all used. Current research seems to show that Narrow Band UVB is the most effective, plus it has the lowest risk of skin cancer.
When light therapy alone is found to be ineffective, it is combined with a drug called Psoralen. This treatment is termed as photo-chemotherapy.
Traditional remedies
Other historical sources - notably traditional Chinese medicine and Western herbalism - suggest a wide variety of treatments, each of which may vary from individual to individual as to efficacy or harm. Toxicity may be present in some.
· Ledeboureilla seseloides
· Potentilla chinensis
· Aebia clematidis
· Clematis armandii
· Rehmannia glutinosa
· Paeonia lactiflora
· Lophatherum gracile
· Dictamnus dasycarpus
· Tribulus terrestris
· Glycyrrhiza uralensis
· Glycyrrhiza glabra
· Schizonepeta tenuifolia
· Schizonepeta tennuifolia
· Azadirachta indica
· evening primrose oil
· burdock
· rooibos
· calamine
· oatmeal
Some alternative (and even conventional) medicine sources state that oatmeal in solution applied topically has a healing effect. This has been noticed through occupational sources, where a person's skin is often exposed to oatmeal at work, e.g., through baking or milling. Often such people retain exceptionally soft and healthy skin into old age.
The symptoms of Biotin deficiency include Seborrheic dermatitis, a skin disorder which is similar to eczema Current research has found that taking biotin alleviates the symptoms of eczema .
Future Treatments
Other than direct treatments of the symptoms, no "cure" for dermatitis is presently known; even cortisone treatments and immunomodulation may often have only minor effects on what may be a complex problem. As the condition is often related to family history of allergies (and thus heredity), it is probable that gene therapy or genetic engineering might help.

Well I have eczema but not on my scalp....
Ask your doctor about this new(ish) eczema medication called Protopic. I think they call it a kind of "immunoregulator" and it does not contain steroids. (therefore does not have the side effects of topical steroids, which makes your skin thinner if you use it for extended periods)
It's worked pretty well on me. My cousin also has scalp eczema and it works for him as well...

Mercedes, I feel for your daughter as I get it to. Now I get it when I am highly stressed noticeably but the HK climate does not help, in fact it exasperates the problem.
Some shampoos make it worse and some are better. Mild ones. But what really helps me, and some might find this crazy, BUT it is also a very cheap solution, and it is natural. It is an Indian powder and readily available. Try TST; any Indian supply shop. If the first one does not have it, ask, and they will direct you, for sure. It is called Shikakai powder, and you can buy it in packets these days. What you do, is you make a solution that is not runny, but more like a paste and lather your hair in it. You lather like you would a shampoo, and rinse out, NO NEED to shampoo after this. I call it mud as that is what it looks like BUT it is made of a mix of Indian herbs. In India you can actually get it mixed professionally. I also find this also works with henna. The water in HK irritates my scalp, but this offers relief, and very fast relief. In is quite incredible the results. Try it before seeing a doctor and see what you think.
Sometimes I use a medicated shampoo from Chinese natural medicine that I buy in China - however even thoughit is good, its effects do not last, not like the Shikakai powder. I swear by Shikakai powder and when living in Europe I actually imported it myself....

>>Yeedaman - quite a few people with skin conditions report success with Protopic.

>Philip George.
The light treatment you talk about is not first line treatment..it is harsh treatment (PUVA with psoralens)...I doubt VERY much it would be used on a young child and can only be accessed through specialist channels. Narrow band light treatment is effective but in the first instance, topical treatment would be the way to go. Again, such light treatments are difficult to access here in HK....unless you buy your own equipment.
Oatmeal you mention is very soothing - but thats all it is. As for recommending costisone or steroid based treatment...I think people need to be aware that steroids treatments are handed out for skin conditions like sweets without full info being given...steroids can cause massive rebound flares and even if they don't, they do thin the skin.
Anyone can google info.

hm,mmm, i am wondering why but do doctors not let you all know the best medicine anymore?
i have 3 variety's of exzema on different areas of my body, and the best is a dip in the sea!
all these medicines work a few days, then not anymore, so you need ever stronger medicines, these medicines are in general not good for you.
seawater though helped me wonders each time!
the sea is close by in HK just pass by once a week and take a few bottlkes home, keep in fridge and your settled

I just bought Nioral from Watson yesterday but you have to go to the one with pharmacy. It costs HK150 for a bottle but they have some promotion at the moment. 2 bottles with a 50$ cash coupon. It means around HK$136 each.
I just bought one bottle to see if it is good first.
