Renting a room in HK and the rules regarding deposits

Hello everyone.

I am new to HK, just moved here a few days ago and am looking for a room. I was just wondering what the laws are to protect a lodger/ tenant rights in HK with regards to renting a room and the deposit. I know how it works in the UK, but I am wondering if it is the same in HK?

Sorry if its a dumb question!

Many thanks for any help! :)

well, the landlord keeps your deposit .. unlike in UK where it is kept separately..., youll usually need 2 months deposit and 1 month rent in advance.. and the tenancy agreements are well dodgy!.. apart from that.. you should be ok if you go through a reputable agency...

Hardly anyone rents out rooms unless they are dodgy landlords. Is this a flat-share? If so, be careful as you need to know who is responsible for what.
