The election's over and the RMY is up.


Since we seem to be scanning the world for property opportunities here these days, how about Malaysia.


And please give particular opinions on one or all of the following, if you have something to share:


+ Kuala Lumpur

+ Penang

+ Johor Bahru (near Singapore)

Malaysian stocks surged on Monday, touching a record high, and the currency jumped after the ruling party retained power in the country's general elections, reassuring investors who had worried about a potential change of government.


The Bursa Malaysia KLCI was last up 3.2%, while the ringgit rose to its highest in almost two years against the dollar. The stock market had been stalled all year in anticipation of the elections and the move upward was seen by analysts as a strengthening of Prime Minister Najib Razak's political coalition and a vote for continuing his fiscal reforms.

Prime Minister Najib Razak has been quick to warn about the dangers of polarization in Malaysian society. But he would be wrong to assume that this election indicates a widening racial divide. Instead, the results demonstrate a growing maturity among voters, especially in urban areas and among young first-time voters who regardless of ethnic identity flocked to the Internet to voice their demands for change.


Malaysians no longer fear those who govern them. Wanting politicians to curb corruption and ethnic favoritism in business and education, they have demonstrated that they can force change by using social media and taking to the streets peacefully.
