"the third-most-lucrative black-market business on the planet, behind only weapons and drugs."

Its a well written article, eyeopening, if not wholly gut-wrenchingly depressing. Appreciate you sharing this with us Ed. Can we have part 3 at some point? This is an education in the most horrible side of human nature but a totally necessary read for everyone who thinks prostitution is all a-ok and a womans choice to make money *SMH*. Human traffic is a major problem even in countries you would think had better policing.

I'll keep my eye out for the 3rd installment...

We live in a very depraved world don't we... that said... the West in some instances, feeds the beast that creates these desperate conditions by installing, propping up, and corrupting, despots who impoverish their people...

So it's not only these raunchy punters who are deserving of our criticism...

I avoid travelling to such countries.

Any place with a rampant sex trade normally also has long queues at the airport, poor security, crooked taxi meters, Police who arrest for the purpose of getting a bribe, kidnappers & bandits, police who side with locals over expats, corrupt immigration officials, shops that falsely accuse you of shoplifting for compensation, unsafe airlines, unsafe water, dirty toilets, etc. The list goes on. In the final analysis you're better off somewhere clean (in every sense of the word)

Treaties & Police actions are good - but economics rules. The answer is do not travel there - eventually when they have no legit tourism left, they will have to clean up their act.

The solution only can come by the government of the Philippines or Thailand.

One solution, in my opinon, is to given their people a FREE EDUCATION, what means better chances to get a well paid job so they don't have to work as sex-workers or domestic helpers in HK (where the employers mean the girls are good enough for working round the clock and only to go out at their day-off! Each slave in the ancient Roman has had better chances!).

And a second point - what about the police corruption in these counries?

Give the police people higher earnings and you get more responsible officers!

Thats true.

Dunno how long ago it was but I got roped into going into one of those bars many years ago and I thought it would be like strip clubs in the U.S, you know, where women keep their knickers on but dance (some of them being very acrobatic, talented dancers) topless. I was disappointed to see just a gathering of tired looking filipina women in budget underwear, mulling about on a stage...swaying hips languidly, but hardly what we would term "dancing".

When I asked the business associate that took me there what the deal was, he admitted all it was...really, was a front for prostitution. Yep, left there pretty quick. Something about the air in that place, made you want to hit up a temple or something after having come into contact with it! *SMH*

Sad....

Thanks for posting the third installment re: Costa Rica.

Those articles remind me of a saying... 'Poverty is a tremendous aphrodisiac'

There's a book - Confessions of a Bangkok Private Eye - to paraphrase the author:

"Contrary to popular belief, flying 10,000 miles does not make you better looking and more witty"

As sad as these articles are, what are the benefits of publishing them? After reading them, has anyone on this forum done anything actively to put an end to it?

Contrary to that, it just provides all the perverts the exact details they need to know about how to go about it, including location, how to make the transactions, what to expect to pay and where to find it.

Some of the perverts may even feel that since this artcile discloses that people flock there by the hundreds of thousands, that this kind of activity is quite acceptable in these countries, and thye wont even need to feel like perverts once there!

And for those of us who would like to travel to these countries for genuine reasons, in the back of our minds we will always be thinking if we are also thought of as perverts and sexual predators for visiting these countries.

I know this is not an easy issue to deal with, but i really dont see how articels like this help its cause?

I think the article serves to possibly force some people to hold a mirror to their face and give them a reality check (i.e. you are not particularly attractive or interesting...)

Also by exposing the sad reality of most women in this trade (i.e. that every single one of them given the choose would prefer NOT to earn money in this manner) it might make some who engage in this exploitation to perhaps treat these women better...

Thats a very good assessment of the issue, Ed.

Coz I have to admit, like rob, I too was thinking the same thing at times when reading the 3 successive articles. Whats to stop some creep from heading over to Moldova or wherever to try his luck, but you are right.

I had this same argument when I was taken to Orchard Towers in Singapore by some business associates, apparently that place is called the "four floors of whores" and well, I never made it past the floor where the live band was...and for all I could tell it looked no different from one of the noisy live band touting bars in Wan Chai, but when the topic of conversation came to prostitution in that venue, I had a hard time of it trying to explain to these associates that there was nothing good or clean fun about prostitution and that the working girls were not in it for lifechanging happiness.

Couldnt convince these men, who no doubt partake on the regular, that it wasnt a life choice for these women. They were, these associates, in turn trying to convince me that these girls did it for the money and the fun of partying and getting their partying paid for. *SMH* Again, the foolishness of the John for thinking that his combover and middleage spread has some supernatural ability to make attractive young women moist!

Pretty sad, really.

FYI

Hi! Let me share some thoughts on this topic. My husband and I will go down in Wan Chai for a beer 2-3 times a week after a long and tiring day at work. I have witness a lot of prostitution in Wan Chai. I have talked to some and also ignore some of them. These women will do whatever they can to earned money. And they will go seduce the VULNERABLE ONES. For the past two years I saw a lot of Filipina prostitute, but their numbers are decreasing because most of them are tourist. They only have 14 days to stay in Hong Kong if they get lucky to go in. And the Philippine and Hong Kong government had been hand to hand helping each other to fight drug trafficking and prostitution for the past 2 years.

For the past six months Indonesians and Thais are flooding the streets of Wan chai and they are more sophisticated and wild. Thais and Indonesians have 30 days of visa. And they can always go across the border for visa extension. The sad truth about this, there is a LOT of western men are with these women. Most of this western men are married obviously they are still wearing their wedding ring while they are cheating; few are young professionals and bachelors. Seeing this kind of scene in Wan Chai makes me feel scared that one day my husband will go with them but my husband is not a "VULNERABLE ONES". My husband had told me one time that “Some men are pig” which is true based on what I’ve seen. On the other hand, as a woman we should always guard our home. It is our duty to protect our family from falling apart. We should not let these women ruin our precious family.

Speaking of WanChai - If a man walks down the street alone in WanChai these women will try to pull him into the bar, grabbing his arm, etc. It "takes two to tango".

And then there are the Wanchai prostitutes who drug their customers & empty their wallets. They normally prey on tourists. Several men has been killed when this went wrong. No one seems to care.

Best to keep away.

I have heard of a lot of woman's suffering because these incidents .I feel so sad for them and for the fact that even a woman forgives she will never forget that she has been cheated .I feel like organizing a marsh against prostitution in hk so police do something !!!! We came to work ,woman sometimes had to spend time out more then the wife wants but in the end temptations in hk are every corner and takes a cup of alcohol more then usually and a bad friend to reach those places ....then they may think :" I am not doing anything wrong ,nobody will know "....and some stupid people will say now : all men cheat !!! Get over it ....he does all for family ,don't over react ! This is more then unfair ! If a woman is under pressure because of house hold or being with few kilos ,we need to worry !!! Life sucks ! Everything sucks ....but u still have to smile and pretend that never happen .....

I agree with you totally that it takes two tango but how many men do you think have said "NO" to these women and how many have said "YES". I don't know the statistic but one thing is for sure they are there because there are people who are buying this kind of services (whatever you call it) It is a sad truth.

seems like there are a couple of questions -

(1) why can't men find satisfaction at home, and find the need to spend money on illicit sex

(2) why can't girls find employment, and seek employment in this awful trade.

Third world countries with a large but poor population, are nearly always the same, this is just about anything the girls can do to make a buck. A guy who I have known for years, but cannot be called a friend, visits Manila regularly on business. He boasts he can have a different girl every night for the cost of a meal ! how ? he is a member of DIA (Dateinasia) ten or so days before he flies down, he goes online, contacts the girls who are members. He tells them he is visiting Manila, its his first time and can they recommend a hotel in Manila. Every one he contacts responds with answers like oh the Sheraton (insert any hotel) is only 5 minutes from my home, I would be most happy to meet you if you stay there. A few more days online chatting and Bingo !When I asked him about money, his response was these are not prostitutes, they want a couple of days in luxury with clean sheets hot showers, Air Con etc. Personally I cannot blame them if they can better themselves for a few days.

No discussion of sex and tourism would be complete without mentioning all the white women who travel overseas in search of men.

Here is one report -

The truth is the wisdom of the world,it never satisfies fleshly desire.

Gods wisdom it satisfies your spirit, soul and body.Only by Glorifying Him it satisfies you totally. The righteous knows whats good and bad.The wicked will continue sinning and doing this horrible thing.......what a sad world without God....
