Hero Labeled "Pedophile" By Elon Musk Poised To Sue for Libel

No sooner did Elon Musk bring the "pedo" controversy back into the mainstream this week when on Twitter, he tripled down on his statements that British cave diver and hero Vernon Unsworth may in fact be a pedophile, than BuzzFeed is out with a new report stating that Unsworth is poised to sue Musk civilly for libel.

According to the BuzzFeed report, Unsworth has retained legal counsel and is "preparing a civil complaint for libel". Unsworth reportedly sent Musk a letter early this month letting him know that a lawsuit could be possible as a result of the statement that Musk made to his over 22 million Twitter followers, referring to Unsworth as "pedo guy".

When Musk made his claim, he did so without evidence and then issued a small apology before deleting his original tweets. As a reminder, Musk had his initial meltdown in July of this year, calling Unsworth "pedo guy" on Twitter.

And just when the controversy appeared to be dying down in the media, Musk simply couldn't let it go. He appeared to revamp his claims early this week on Twitter yet again, after he suggested that Unsworth's lack of litigation on the matter was somehow validation that his original claims were accurate.

But contrary to what Musk stated, it now appears as though a lawsuit may actually happen.

Below is the full text of the letter obtained by BuzzFeed that was sent to Musk on August 6. In it, it calls Musk's statements "false and defamatory" and points out that Musk stated, in three Tweets to 22 million followers, that Unsworth "engages in the sexual exploitation of Thai children" at the very same time "he was working to save the lives of twelve Thai children".

When Unsworth was asked to comment by Sky News on Wednesday, he simply told the station "it’s all being dealt with, that’s all I can say," according to the BuzzFeed report.

This potential litigation is just the latest in a set of possible consequences that Musk could be lining up for himself as a result of his erratic behavior and outlandish statements on social media (such as taking Tesla private for one).

One would think that, during the middle of this month's go private circus in which Musk and the Board embarrassed themselves, the embattled CEO would be trying to say as little as possible on Twitter. But that doesn’t seem to be the case, and the company's Board of Directors appears to be just fine with it. Which should make for an interesting remainder of 2018.

Let's get an update on The Fool:

Elon Musk Sued For Libel, Slander and Assault By Thai Cave Diver Over "Pedo Guy" Comment

The British cave diver who helped rescue 12 children in Thailand and who was hailed a hero by everybody in the world except Elon Musk – who instead decided to label him "pedo guy" and then later a "child rapist", has reportedly sued Musk for libel, assault and slander.

Vernon Unsworth and his attorneys filed the suit in the US district court for the Central District of California, according to BuzzFeed. The Tesla CEO's tweets and emails to BuzzFeed were submitted as exhibits in the lawsuit.

The suit alleges that Musk sought to destroy his reputation after Unsworth made outspoken comments about how he believed Musk's solution for the cave rescue was "just a PR stunt". The suit says Musk went after Unsworth's reputation “by publishing false and heinous accusations of criminality against him to the public.”

The lawsuit provides a history of the rescue according to Unsworth. It paints him as a "highly respected caver" with four decades of experience, including a handful of rescues in the United Kingdom. And the suit also reportedly explains that Unsworth's first visit to Thailand was in 2011, before exploring the caves for the first time in May 2012.

The suit reportedly says he spent six years going over the cave system and that he was "the first foreign rescuer" to arrive on the scene after calls for help. It also claims he was one of the last to leave, which directly contradicts Musk’s statement that he was banned from the site.

It states that he has never visited the area of Pattaya Beach, a destination in Thailand known for sex tourism.

His lawyer stated:

Unsworth’s British lawyer, Mark Stephens, told AP: “Twibels (Twitter libels) show that falsehoods by the rich and powerful can circulate round the globe to their 22.5 million followers and to the media before the truth can pull its boots on. The truth has now got its boots on and Elon Musk is being brought to account for repeatedly attacking and taunting the good name of an ordinary spelunker: Vernon Unsworth who answered the call and (with others) put his life on the line to help rescue the 13 trapped in the caves in Thailand.”

Recently Musk had quadrupled down on his comments that Unsworth was indeed a pedophile based solely on the fact that Unsworth had not sued him yet. Now, it looks like that argument is off the table for Musk.

Not even 7 days after we pondered what part of Elon Musk's PR genius compelled him to triple down on his claim that Unsworth was a "pedo" than Musk was back at it again. He then reportedly quadrupled down on these claims, essentially going "all in" on his previous statements and labeling rescue diver Vern Unsworth a "child rapist" in an e-mail he sent to BuzzFeed news.

Musk said Unsworth had moved to Thailand in order to take a child bride "who was about 12 years old at the time". Musk wrote:

“I suggest that you call people you know in Thailand, find out what’s actually going on and stop defending child rapists, you fucking asshole,” Musk wrote in the first message. “He’s an old, single white guy from England who’s been traveling to or living in Thailand for 30 to 40 years, mostly Pattaya Beach, until moving to Chiang Rai for a child bride who was about 12 years old at the time.”

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has had a big week, and it’s only Tuesday.

In a bizarre speech, delivered to a crowd gathered beside his commercial space ship, known as BFR, Musk warned his guests that Earth needed to become a “multi-planet civilisation”, and we need to do it right now.

“There could be some natural event or some man-made event that ends civilization as we know it, and ends life as we know it,?” Musk rambled into a microphone.

Throughout the speech the Tesla chief appeared jittery and would look off into the distance, often leaving sentences unfinished and sweating before having to remove his jacket.

SEC charges Tesla CEO Elon Musk with fraud

Suit sends Tesla shares down 11 percent in after-hours trading

SEC seeks order that Musk can’t serve as officer or director

The SEC announcement points out that just because it’s said on Twitter doesn’t mean it’s OK to blatantly lie to investors to manipulate up the shares. Providing “truthful and accurate information is among a CEO’s most critical obligations,” the statement said. “That standard applies with equal force when the communications are made via social media or another non-traditional form.”

And it doesn’t matter if Musk has a halo: “An officer’s celebrity status or reputation as a technological innovator does not give license to take those responsibilities lightly,” it said.

Alas, these charges apparently do not include the most recent lies, such as his absurd BS tweet three days ago that Tesla was “upgrading” its “logistics system,” and because it was “running into an extreme shortage of car carrier trailers,” it would start “building our own car carriers this weekend to alleviate load.”

Tesla building car carrier trailers over the weekend? What moron would actually believe this blatant lie?

Even if no one believes his blatant lies, he still tells them. But then on second thought, there are many true believers who believe anything he says, and plenty of fund managers that have too much money at stake with their Tesla shares that they rode all the way up into ludicrousness so that they must believe every blatant lie he tells, because they must buy the shares when they sell off because they have too much at stake, and they cannot allow the shares to drop….
