Do you often find yourself thinking that you should be reading more? Or perhaps you’re someone who wants to fall in love with reading but doesn’t know where to start. A big mistake that people make when they do pick up a book is believing they need to read the “right” one. But the benefits of reading, from reducing stress to living longer, apply as long as you spend a few hours doing it per week regardless of the content.

Now that you know you can read whatever your heart desires, our friends at Pacific Prime Hong Kong are here to offer tips on how to start reading again.

You must find out how to love books in your own way

The trick to developing any habit is to find out what works for you. For example, just because you don’t like sitting down with a book doesn’t mean you don’t like reading. Maybe you just prefer to listen to audiobooks. Whether you have a book in your hands or playing in your headphones, the most important thing is to actually devote time to it.

Speaking of time, audiobooks are an ideal option for when you’re commuting, cleaning up, or exercising. No one is forcing you to sit and read a book. You might find yourself craving to listen to more books when you tie it with running in the park or washing the dishes.

If you find yourself saying you don’t have time to read but spend hours scrolling on your phone then it could help to make a habit of keeping your book next to your phone. That way, you’ll have to make a decision every time you reach for your phone. Having a book close to you as often as possible is a great way to encourage reading, whether it’s keeping one in your bag or on your desk.

Does carrying a book around sound troublesome? Then read off an electronic device like an e-reader or tablet instead. It might not have the same feel as a book, but if it gets you to read more regularly then it’s good enough.

Are you the kind of person who loves ticking off checklists? You might want to challenge yourself to a certain number of pages or chapters every day and get satisfaction from going about it that way. Or maybe you’d like to be part of a reading group or start a book club with a friend.

These are all examples of ways that you can make reading a part of your life. All you have to do is actually read instead of thinking about it. But maybe the most important tip to fall in love with reading again is to remember you don’t have to finish a book just because you started it.
