I am pregnant at the age of 44 and as I am in the high risk catergory of having a child with Down Syndrome was wondering if anyone knows if there is anywhere in Hong Kong that is performing the new blood test for Down Syndrome rather than the other intrusive tests.
Thanks

Hi curlysue2,
If you are talking about the nuchal translucency test as far as I know all public hospitals do it, I know for a fact QMH definitely do do it. Or you could see any private Dr, They basically take your blood, measure the skin fold on the back of the babies neck and the nasal bone, it's usually done between the 12th and 13th week. Keep in mind though, this test has been known to come back positive as my friends did so she later did an amnio and it was all clear. She has a healthy baby girl now.

hknixon is right. all public hospitals carry out the blood test accompanied by an ultrasound at around your 12th week of pregnancy. and if you go through the public hospital the test is free.

Congrats on your pregnancy Michelle. I've read about the blood test you are talking about but I don't think it is available yet. I had a baby last year and did the nuchal scan and blood test at week 12 and the amnio in the 2nd trimester. You could check with the Prenatal Diagnostic Centre. If anyone does the new test, it would be them.

Thanks for your advice. I will check the prenatal Diagnostic Centre, this test is supposed to be 100% accurate and would be great if it is available.

I had it done at prenantal disagnostic centre by Dr Lam, the test you are referring to is call NIFTY (Non-invasive Prentatal Genetic Testing). Its 99% accurate, compared to the traditional OSCAR test which is only 90% accurate. The result of NIFTY takes 2 weeks, as they have to send your blood sample to an uni in China for testing. Gluck!
