- Tax Equalization: Oversee the firm's tax equalization or tax protection policies, calculating hypothetical taxes and processing year-end equalization settlements.
- Business Travelers & Remote Work: Monitor and manage the individual tax footprints, tracking, and compliance risks of cross-border business travelers and cross-border remote work arrangements.
- Permanent Establishment (PE) Risk: Partner with corporate tax teams to evaluate whether the physical presence of mobile individual fund managers triggers corporate tax or PE exposure for the fund entities in host countries.
- Deferrals & Carry Schemes: Partner with HR and legal teams to analyze the individual tax implications of complex financial structures like carried interest, co-investment schemes, performance fees, and deferred bonus arrangements.
- Equity & Token Plans: Manage the tax compliance, cross-border sourcing, and reporting mechanics of share options, Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and phantom equity awards across different local tax regimes.
- Sourcing Rules: Determine tax-sourcing allocations (e.g., time-apportionment claims or territorial-source principles) for variable compensation earned across multiple countries.
- Shadow Payroll Management: Coordinate and review shadow payroll operations required to capture tax withholding for expatriate employees.
- Employer Reporting: Ensure timely and accurate filing of statutory employer returns (e.g., Form IR56 series in Hong Kong, Form IR8A in Singapore, and similar local statutory payroll reporting in APAC).
- Vendor Governance: Manage relationship networks, budgets, and delivery quality of external Big 4 advisors or specialized immigration/tax vendors handling individual returns.
- Treaty Interpretation: Apply Comprehensive Double Taxation Agreements (CDTAs) and local legislation to resolve cross-border individual tax double-exposure.
- Tax Audits: Lead individual and employer-level tax audits, inquiries, or information requests initiated by APAC tax authorities (like the Inland Revenue Department in HK or IRAS in Singapore).
- C-Suite Advisory: Act as a dedicated internal advisor providing clear, practical guidance on personal tax exposure directly to high-net-worth portfolio managers and C-suite stakeholders.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Bridge communication lines between internal Human Resources, Payroll, Corporate Legal, Finance Controllership, and Global Tax Heads.
