About the job
Senior Algorithmic Trading Developer - Cash Equities
Join a leading financial technology and trading organisation developing sophisticated algorithmic execution solutions for cash equities across Asian markets.
This is an opportunity for a senior software engineer to work at the intersection of software engineering, quantitative trading and electronic execution, building and enhancing algorithmic trading strategies used by institutional investors and professional trading desks.
You will join an experienced Algo Development team within a fast-paced front-office environment, working closely with traders, quantitative researchers and business stakeholders to develop new execution capabilities and continuously improve an established algorithmic trading platform.
The role offers the opportunity to take technical ownership of key areas of the platform, with potential to grow into a technical leadership / Tech Lead position as the team and platform continue to evolve.
The Role
As a Senior Algorithmic Trading Developer, you will play a key role in designing, developing and enhancing cash equity execution algorithms and the underlying trading platform.
You will develop a strong understanding of equity market microstructure, execution strategies and trading workflows, using this knowledge to translate trading requirements into robust, scalable technology solutions.
As a senior member of the team, you will be expected to take ownership of significant technical initiatives, contribute to architectural decisions and help guide engineering practices across the Algo platform.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Design, develop and enhance algorithmic execution strategies for cash equities across Asian markets
- Work with trading and quantitative teams to develop and refine execution strategies such as VWAP, TWAP, Participation/POV, Implementation Shortfall and liquidity-seeking algorithms
- Develop functionality around order scheduling, order slicing, liquidity management, market impact and execution optimisation
- Analyse trading performance using metrics such as slippage, transaction costs, fill rates, market impact and execution quality
- Develop a deep functional and technical understanding of existing algorithmic strategies to identify opportunities for optimisation and improvement
- Work directly with traders, quantitative researchers and business stakeholders to understand requirements, assess opportunities and deliver solutions
- Take technical ownership of key components and contribute to the architecture and longer-term technology direction of the algorithmic trading platform
- Provide technical guidance to other developers and help establish engineering standards and best practices
- Drive the design and delivery of complex projects from initial requirements through to production
- Build supporting technology including testing frameworks, simulation/backtesting tools, monitoring, alerting and operational tooling
- Analyse historical market and trading data to evaluate strategy performance across different market conditions, liquidity profiles and volatility regimes
- Use Python for quantitative analysis, backtesting and investigation of trading behaviour
- Drive engineering best practices including TDD, unit testing, code reviews, CI/CD and automated testing
- Collaborate with teams across Trading, Quant Research, QA, Production Support, Operations, Compliance and other technology functions
- Provide Level 2 production support, investigating issues and helping to maintain the reliability and performance of critical trading systems
- Contribute to the evolution of the team's development practices, technical roadmap and overall engineering capability
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years of hands-on software development experience, ideally within financial markets or another highly complex, high-performance technology environment
- Strong Java development experience
- Experience developing or supporting electronic trading, algorithmic trading or execution systems
- Strong understanding of equity market microstructure and electronic execution
- Familiarity with concepts such as VWAP, TWAP, POV/Participation, Implementation Shortfall, liquidity, order books, slippage and market impact
- Experience working closely with traders, quantitative researchers or other front-office stakeholders
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to investigate trading behaviour and translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Experience taking technical ownership of projects, platforms or core components
- Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring developers or acting as a Tech Lead / Lead Developer would be advantageous
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction and make sound architecture and design decisions
- Experience working across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements and design through to production deployment and support
- Experience with Python for analytics, data analysis or backtesting is advantageous
- Experience with quantitative, statistical or machine-learning techniques is advantageous
- Strong understanding of software engineering principles, including testing, code quality, system design and production reliability
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Engineering or a related quantitative discipline
Why This Opportunity?
- Work on real-time algorithmic trading and execution technology within a front-office environment
- Exposure to sophisticated cash equity execution strategies and market microstructure
- Collaborate closely with traders, quantitative researchers and experienced technology professionals
- Take ownership of core components within a mission-critical trading platform
- Opportunity to influence the evolution of an established algorithmic trading framework
- Potential to progress towards technical leadership / Tech Lead responsibilities while remaining hands-on with technology
- Opportunity to work on technically challenging problems involving high-volume trading, real-time decision-making and complex market data
