Dependent Visa

ORIGINAL POST

Can someone help, I have recently got married to my long term girlfriend who is HK girl. I applied for a dependent visa and they have just come back and said that she needs to show 3 months bank statements to prove she can support me. Firstly I wanted to know how much she needs to show she has to prove she can support me, also if I were to put the money into her account would this be sufficient, and finally if the answer to the last question is yes, if I go down to immigration tower with the info can they process it there and then?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am assuming that your application is going through now, right? So how will it work out for you to put money into her account now unless the interview for info gathering is 3 months from now?

Just wondering, if you are worried, maybe you can arrange to sort out the particulars in 3 months?

I read up the requirements for the dependant visa (http://www.guidemehongkong.com/relocation/work-visa/hong-kong-dependant-visa-guide) and it looks more like they just need your wifes bankstatements or payslips. Just likely its for proof of residence or financial standing, not that she can support you, its more of a formality. I mean, how does it make sense that she is supposed to support you if she has no job or her income in that of an office girl, right? Best to ask the Immigration Dept more questions. Unless you two got married purely for a visa for you, you have no reason to shy away from asking the immigration dept these questions as they are very helpful if you actually get through to an officer.

Good luck!

Why do you think the immigration asks for 3-months worth of statements? It's a simple way to check whether she has a good flow of income and also to check whether new money was "instantly" deposited just for the purpose of supporting a dependent visa applicant (tongue-in-cheek).

As stated by Justin above, the immigration department would like to make sure that you will not be a burden to Hong Kong society. If your wife can support you, then you will not likely to apply for government payoffs. Quite simple really.

In your case, if your wife has a home of her own (rental agreement), has a job (payslips), a bank account (bank statement), then there should be no problem with your application. Even if there's only minimal balance in the bank account as long as there's regular income coming in, I would GUESS that the Immigration department will not stop you from joining your wife here in Hong Kong.

Thanks guys for both of your advice, just to let you know visa got approved today with 1 months payslip and minimal money in my wife's account, I guess it was just to see regular income.

Hi Bimble,

could you kindly tell me how long it took for thei mmigration to approve your visa after your wife's payslip was submitted? Did you fax them the documents or give it to them personally?

Thanks in advance.

oh ok. Thanks.

Im in a similar situation, but the letter I received asked me to fax or post proof of my financial standings, i faxed it to them 2 days back but haven't heard anything as yet. Tried calling them and they said they will call me once they see the fax. My husband isn't with me yet so do you think I should visit the immigration and check why it is getting delayed? Or should I just wait for their call or letter? I submitted my application 6 n a half weeks ago.

Agree.. just wait.

In anycase once your husbands application has been submitted and is being processed, he should be able to get an extension of his visa without having to leave HK. Given that he has not joined you yet, you'll probably have an answer from immiration before there is any need for that.

7 weeks is a long time, you should be worried. The wife's took 4 business days.

For reference, we submitted about an inch thick of paper. Photographs with friends and family on both sides and in various locations, with different hair cuts etc over a 3 year period, tax records, bank statements, employment contract, house deed, insurance policies, proof we were living together for a couple of years, a list of friends ID card numbers and phone numbers for references, phone records, emails to each other when we were apart for business trips etc, whatsapp message history, etc.

Thanks for the info..

Yeah I know, its too long.. today its 8 weeks. I havent heard anything yet. I did submit all of that too, but I jus moved bak to hong kong after higher studies and have no house deeds as yet but i've got many relations here and my uncle gave a letter to show that he will house me and my husband till we get a place of our own. Im really worried now. I called the immigration last week and my case officer was on holiday, so im assuming this could be one reason for the delay.

The only detail they asked me was for financial proof and once that was submitted (2weeks ago) they haven't said anythin yet. Do you think I should visit the immigration and ask them why it's taking so long? Confused.

It will not be an issue and the statements could be valuables, or any property possessions that should help you with your application, including investments made in home shares, government bonds etc.

You have no choice but to apply for dependent visa anyway, so just go ahead and do it. Having no contract and payment receipt should be no problem. I suggest you ask your parents to write a "certification" that you're living with them, and that it's okay for your husband to stay with them too, etc. The important thing is to prove to immigration that the husband has a place to stay, and somebody to support him financially and therefore not going to be a burden to the HK govt.

Hello Everyone-
I came to HK on work visa just after few days of getting married. I applied for my wife's dependent visa the second day i was in HK. After four and a half weeks of submitting the application I got a letter from immigration that they need additional documents like, wedding photographs, bank statement for past 3 months( although I haven't completed 3 months in HK yet), birth certificate of my wife, tenancy agreement, etc.

Its been 4 days now that i submitted the additional documents they requested and in total its been over 7 weeks now that i applied for the dependent visa. I sent them an email to check the status but only got a reply that my email has been forwarded to the concerned department.

I discussed the matter with my recruiter and they called the immigration to check the current status. Now I came to know that it would take another 4-6 weeks for approval and all.

At the moment I am not sure if they have accepted the documents I provided. Its been over 7 weeks now and I am really struggling here as I want my wife to join me in HK.

Any suggestions in order to expedite the process as its already been more than the standard 6 weeks time? Any help would be appreciated.
