Dependant Visa - Easier to get job?

Hi guys,


I could really do with some advice and hoping you may be able to help.


My boyfriend is being relocated with his work in April to help set up an office over there.

I am a UK national and understand I can visit HK for up to 6 months without any visa. However I also understand I will not be able to open bank acc get a job etc.


Here is my dilemma – I want to get a job, but from my research, I understand it is extremely difficult to get sponsorship from companies over there especially without a degree ( I am only educated to a-level) with increasing competition from other expats and HK nationals.


Therefore - Is it easier to get a job if you are on a dependent visa so you already have a HKID card and working visa etc.?

Or what would happen if you were sponsored by a company and got a working visa then say you got sacked/made redundant would you’re working visa/ HKID card still be valid or would you just revert back to a tourist visa?

Final Q - Unfortunately I cannot speak Cantonese or Mandarin would this make the possibility of me getting a job almost impossible? Also is the language easy to learn/pick up once you are over there?

let's clarify a few things...


1 if you are on a Dep Visa (meaning you have married your boyfriend), you don't get an Employment visa; you are legally entitled to work through your Dep visa. And it is arguably easier to find work since an employer doesn't need to sponsor you (which requires alot of hoop-jumping by them) so you may be a more attractive candidate...


2. getting a Dep visa will require your (husband) to show the ability to support both of you reasonably on his income alone (tho i've never heard of that being an issue)


3. if you obtain an Employment visa, typically a one year duration but possibly more depending on the length of your contract, it will be valid until it expires. however, the onus is on you and your employer to report to IMMD if you are terminated before it expires, and before you obtain employment again. a Dependent visa also has a set term (mine is 3 years) and as long as you're still married, simply renew it


4. English is widely used everywhere here in your daily life, and Canto/Mand are notoriously difficult languages to master, tho learning some conversational canto is not too much of a stretch; not speaking the language, and with limited quals, there may be few jobs suitable for you tho...what skills do you have?


5. the standard answer to you dilemna is typically "teach English!". if you do go this route, PLEASE get proper training, certification (TESL/CELTA/TESOL/) before you come here...too many tourist teachers here already...
