The national park on the edge of the world

I’m standing atop a small summit overlooking a rippling olive-hued coastline and a silver ocean glinting in the morning sun. From here on Mount Milner, 186 metres above sea level, I’ve got a pretty decent view. To the north is a large bristling bay, its edges scalloped with coves harbouring blond sweeps of sand.

To the south, a narrow inlet is flanked by peaks marbled with quartzite cliffs. In front of me, to the west, the restless ocean rolls in, crashing into islets and offshore rocks and, in particular, into a small band of islands known as The Breakseas.

“There’s nothing in that direction until Africa,” says Peter Mooney, my tall and contemplative guide. He’s pointing west, to the open ocean, and while it’s probably hyperbole (I’m sure there are a few scrappy islands between here and the Cape of Good Hope), he’s making a salient point. Just to check, I point south. “Antarctica?” I ask. He nods.

I’m in Tasmania on a four-day adventure in the Southwest National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Site, a swathe of protected bushland that occupies almost a fifth of the state. Run by Tasmanian Boat Charters, this voyage focuses on the Port Davey Marine Reserve, a huge 17,753-hectare waterway system that cuts into the coastline in the far south-western corner of Tassie.
