Health Insurance for newborn?
Posted by Blatant (573 days ago)
Hi, our baby is due in 2 weeks and I am wondering about health insurance for him. My wife has health/maternity insurance but there seems to be some confusion as to whether he will be covered for the 1st 30 days?
If anyone here has recently been through this could they please advise. I am with HSBC corporate insurance, but my wife is not covered. We have her covered through a broker over here using a European insurance company. Is a little bit of a hassle to make claims.
HSBC seems easy with the use of the card, but keen to hear anyones comments on cost & when it kicks in.
I went into HSBC website today to try to figure it out, but it keeps tewlling me the body mass index is out of range.
Many thanks

A lot of insurance companies cover children for a small additional fee. I would call HSBC and ask. Websites often "can't handle" young kids as you have discovered.

I would definately give HSBC a call. We are with Manulife and when our 10 day old baby was re-admitted to the hospital we discovered that the insurance didn't kick in until she was 15 days old! Hence we had to pay the doctors fees etc out of our own pocket.

Blatant,
Maternity insurance... that makes me think I should get one (I am 7 months pregnant). What exactly is it? How do I get covered? I have life/accident coverage with a Canadian insurance company. Do these companies also offer maternity insurance?

frenchfries - congrats on the pregnancy. Out of luck with maternity insurance. Need to get that sorted 9.5 months before falling preggers.
It is health insurance to cover the cost of gyno/ob visits, scans, hospital & delivery charges etc. It all adds up as I am sure you now know.
It might be worth talking to your insurance co to see if you are covered at all. Good luck.

transhk,
Thanks for that. Now that I think about it, I had heard about the maternity insurance a while back. Once you buy the insurance, you need to fall pregnant within a certain period of time in order to be covered, right? Good thing we didn't go for it, because it took us a year to get pregnant the first time, not to mention it ended in a miscarriage! Took us another half year to get pregnant again...
Unfortunately, all our expenses relating to the pregnancy is coming out of our own pocket. My husband's corporate insurance does not cover anything to do with pregnancy. Sucks...

You won't find cover for child if you are already pregnant.. that is unless you are with a group health scheme and even then you are likely to find there is no cover until after a couple of weeks or limited cover say for three months.
Having a child with a congenital problems from birth may not be avoidable but having to fork out a fortune for a child with a lifetime of medical expenses is a possibility that I'd want to insure against, if I could.
Two companies I have found that not only guarantee renewal of their policy but also guarantee to cover the child after birth are BUPA / IHI and also Munich Re/ Nordic. Contact Andrew Robertson of RS Insurance Brokers tel 3106 2938 or Lal Hardasani of Lals Insurance Brokers - tel 2850 5666
