Antique Khmer Style Thai Wood Reclining Nirvana Buddha Statue - 63cm/25"

Brought back from Thailand in the 1971 from an Antique Shop about 40 min drive from city centre. An area with antique shops like Hollywood Road in HK on the island side.



Carved Sleeping Buddha in solid wood lacquered and gilded with 24k gold leaf Thailand. 

Length : 63 cm ; 

Height : 20 cm ; 

Depth  : 18 cm ;

Weight : about 2.8 Kg.

The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizes his high level of spiritual development. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow.

His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a Prince wearing heavy gold earrings.

The detail of the sculpture is beautiful, as you can see in the fine details of the face and toes. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony.

The Buddha is laying down on his side in calm repose. This pose captures him in his final moments before his death. The pose is also referred to as the sleeping Buddha and symbolizes the Buddha's achievement of nirvana or enlightenment. The Buddha knew the exact moment of his death and at this time lay down to sleep and simply passed away peacefully with his enlightened soul eternally escaping the cycle of samsara.
