Self-esteem is best understood as holding oneself in positive regard, including accepting your weaknesses, your occasional mistakes, your strengths and your equal status to others. Poor self-esteem is associated with many other mental stressful conditions such as depression, anxiety, OCD, alcoholism and drug use, internet addiction, procrastination and perfectionism. The exact nature (causative, correlative) is the matter of debate. The good news is that treatment of self-esteem can have positive knock on benefits.
Treatment of self-esteem can include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Narrative therapy and Art therapy. At RED DOOR we use a combination of these techniques to help clients assess their current self-perceptions and help build resilient, more positive self-regard for the future.
At RED DOOR we work on the self-esteem of all of our clients, either directly or indirectly. We also offer a session on self-esteem as part of our Adult Resilience and Mental Wellbeing courses which run a couple of times a year.
