The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO), a 93-member ensemble, is the first and only fully professional orchestra in Hong Kong. Last season alone, we gave about 200 performances for over 150,000 people. The ensemble turned professional in 1974, and when the Hong Kong Cultural Centre opened in 1989, the Concert Hall became the Orchestra's "home". All these are tremendous improvements since the HKPO's forerunner, the Sino-British Orchestra, held its first concert in 1895 in the old City Hall, with the conductor directing from an up-ended wooden box.
