Job Purpose

This role is to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of AS/400 systems within the bank.

It involves troubleshooting and resolving technical issues, performing regular system maintenance, and implementing updates to enhance system performance and security. Additionally, the job incumbent will need to collaborate with other IT teams to support business operations, maintain detailed records of system performance, and provide technical guidance to optimize the use of AS/400 resource.

Main Responsibilities

System Administration​:

  • Install, configure, and maintain AS/400 operating systems and related software.
  • Ensure system security by implementing appropriate security measures, such as OS hardening and patches.
  • Perform regular system backups and implement disaster recovery procedures.
  • Implement and manage backup and recovery procedures to protect critical data from system failures or disasters.
  • Ensure seamless integration between the AS/400 system and other systems or applications, such as web servers, databases…etc.
  • Configure and manage job scheduling and automation tools to streamline routine tasks and ensure the timely execution of critical processes.
  • Automate system administration tasks using scripting languages.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls.

System Monitoring and Capacity Planning:

  • Monitor system performance and identify and troubleshoot issues, such as system crashes, slow response times, and resource utilization.
  • Analyzing system performance data, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing optimization strategies to ensure the AS/400 system operates efficiently.

Patch and Upgrade

  • Perform software upgrades and patch management to address end-of-support and security vulnerabilities. ​
  • Upgrade any legacy End-of-Support (EOS) hardware and software components to ensure continued vendor support and system reliability.

Governance & Reporting

  • Maintain documentation for audits and compliance reviews.
  • Conduct System Acceptance Testing (SAT) and user account reviews on a semi-annual basis.
  • Provide monthly performance reports.
  • Prepare annual capacity planning reports.

Disaster Recovery & Resilience

  • Set up and maintain system backup jobs to ensure data protection and recoverability. ​
  • Prepare and maintain DR failover procedures for AS/400 systems. ​
  • Activate and support DR systems during annual DR drills. ​

Incident & Problem Management ​

  • Conduct incident resolution efforts, perform root cause analysis, and implement preventive and corrective actions.

Project & Change Management ​

  • Coordinate infrastructure changes involving AS/400 deployments or upgrades. ​
  • Liaise with vendors for procurement, installation, and support of relevant hardware and software

Requirements:

Education and Qualification:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Formal training or certifications in IBM i (AS/400) system administration are highly valued.
  • Candidate possess following Technical Certifications such as IBM Certified System Administrator, or IBM Certified System Architect is desirable.

Work Experience:

  • For manager role, 5-8 years of experience as a AS/400 Administrator or in a similar focused role.
  • For senior manager role, 8-10 years of experience as a AS/400 Administrator or in a similar focused role.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in IBM i (AS/400) operating system administration, including managing user accounts, security, backup, and recovery.
  • Strong understanding of IBM i hardware components and their configurations.
  • Expertise in storage management, including disk, tape, and SAN technologies.
  • Familiarity with patch management, software upgrades, and handling End-of-Support (EOS) hardware/software.
  • Solid understanding of disaster recovery planning, backup strategies, and failover procedures.
