Associate Director, Global FX Strategist. Role overview
This is a role for a high-performing team in GIR. The FX research team produces a few flagship products that consistently have the highest readership in GIR, reflecting HSBC's strength in FX trading globally. This is not a pure research role. We are client-facing. Our research is a means to service clients - both external clients and internal stakeholders.
As an FX strategist based in Asia, one is expected to cover Asia-Pacific currencies in depth, and be able to also present global and EM views to Asia-based clients. Since FX research sits within the Global Macro Strategy pillar in GIR, one will also be required to work closely with Economics, Rates Strategy, Equity Strategy, Multi-Asset Strategy and the Data Science team to deliver broader department goals.
FX research relies on both quantitative and qualitative analysis, and also takes into consideration multiple viewpoints in various asset classes. This is not an entry-level role; it requires experience in macro and market analysis.
In this role you will
- Report to the Head of Asia FX Research, helping to (i) cover certain Asian currencies in depth - formulate well-informed views, publish research, generate trade ideas, publicise our expertise; (ii) support internal stakeholders - through regular exchanges with sales & trading, and provision of other ad-hoc inputs as required; (iii) service external clients directly - handle bespoke requests, participate in calls/meetings/seminars
- Be an integral part of the Global FX Research team
- Be an integral part of the Global Macro Strategy pillar
To be successful you will need
Skill Set
- Quantitative - Understand econometrics, run regressions, Python coding
- Language - English and a second Asian language (e.g. mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Bahasa, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Thai, etc.)
- Writing & analysis - Synthesize information, write concisely, be time-efficient
- Presentation - Convincing, persuasive, engaging
Qualifications
- Bachelors/Masters/PhD in economics/finance
Experience
- At least 2 years experience in a financial markets role - can be sales/trading/research; can be any asset class, not just FX
