WPS Technical Product Expert. Job Purpose The Wealth & Premier Solutions Technical Product Expert is responsible for shaping, prioritising, and delivering digital products and features that create clear business value and measurable ROI for the Wealth & Premier franchise.
The role sits at the junction of business, product, and technology. It requires strong commercial acumen as well as technical understanding to:
- Translate customer and business needs into compelling, feasible product propositions.
- Build robust business cases with quantified benefits and costs.
- Secure buy-in and funding from business stakeholders.
- Guide delivery teams so that what is built is aligned to expected outcomes (revenue growth, cost efficiency, risk reduction, client experience).
As HSBC iWPB Wealth & Premier Solutions adopts cloud, Agile, and DevOps, this role ensures that digital initiatives are not just technically sound, but commercially justified and successfully adopted across markets.
Principal Responsibilities 1. Business Value & ROI Ownership - Develop clear value propositions and business cases for new and enhanced products across the Wealth & Premier Solutions (WPS) portfolio, including revenue, cost, risk, and customer experience impacts.
- Quantify and track product-level KPIs and ROI (e.g., AUM growth, conversion rates, digital adoption, cost-to-serve, STP rate, call deflection, operational risk events).
- Work with Finance and business stakeholders to validate assumptions, financial models, and payback periods for key initiatives.
- Continuously review performance metrics to recommend product optimisations, de-prioritisation, or retirement of low-value features.
2. Stakeholder Engagement & Buy-In - Act as the primary technical-business interface for assigned Wealth & Premier products/journeys (e.g., digital onboarding, investment journeys, advisory tools, servicing).
- Influence and secure sponsorship from business stakeholders by articulating the commercial rationale, trade-offs, and strategic alignment of product initiatives.
- Lead workshops and discussions with Wealth, Premier, Distribution, Operations, Risk, Compliance, and Finance to prioritise features based on business impact and feasibility.
- Prepare and present product roadmaps, business cases, and progress updates to senior stakeholders, steering committees, and governance forums.
3. Product Strategy & Roadmap - Co-own product vision and strategy with Business and Product Owners, ensuring alignment with WPS strategy and Future State Architecture.
- Translate strategic objectives into a clear, prioritised product backlog (epics, features, and user stories) with business value clearly defined for each item.
- Balance customer experience improvements, revenue opportunities, regulatory changes, and technical debt in the roadmap.
- Ensure consistent product approach and re-use of capabilities across APAC markets where appropriate.
4. Technical Design & Delivery Alignment - Collaborate with enterprise and solution architects to design fit-for-purpose, scalable, and secure technical solutions that deliver the defined business outcomes.
- Translate business requirements into concrete technical requirements (APIs, data flows, integration points, non-functional requirements).
- Provide clarity and guidance to engineering and DevOps teams, ensuring that implementation choices (e.g., architecture patterns, integrations) support ROI objectives.
- Participate in design reviews and option analyses, explicitly weighing cost, complexity, time-to-market, and business value in decision-making.
5. Execution in Agile & DevOps - Support Agile squads in backlog refinement, sprint planning, and release planning, ensuring priorities reflect business value and commitments to stakeholders.
- Define acceptance criteria linked to business outcomes (e.g., X% reduction in manual processing", Y% increase in digital completion rate").
- Work with QA, SRE, and operations teams to ensure that performance, resilience, and reliability meet business expectations, especially for high-value customer journeys.
- Champion automation, observability, and data-driven experimentation (A/B testing, feature flags) to accelerate learning and improve ROI.
6. Innovation & Continuous Improvement - Identify opportunities to leverage new technologies (e.g., AI/ML, Generative AI, advanced analytics, event-driven architecture) to generate new revenue streams, improve client experience, or reduce cost/risk.
- Benchmark WPS products against competitors and leading digital wealth players to identify gaps and opportunities.
- Promote a test-and-learn mindset: pilot new ideas, measure results, and scale successful initiatives.
- Share lessons learned, best practices, and success stories across markets and teams to increase adoption and re-use.
Requirements Experience - Proven experience in Product Management, Technical Product Ownership, or Solution/Business Architecture in wealth management, retail banking, or investments.
- Demonstrated ability to build and present business cases for complex digital solutions, including financial modelling and benefits realisation.
- Track record of influencing senior business stakeholders and achieving buy-in for technology-enabled change.
- Experience working in Agile and DevOps environments, collaborating closely with business, technology, and operations teams.
Business & Commercial Acumen - Strong understanding of wealth and premier banking business models (e.g., AUM growth drivers, product revenue, cost-to-serve, distribution channels).
- Ability to link technical features to business outcomes, quantify benefits, and communicate trade-offs in business terms.
- Comfortable working with financial metrics, P&L levers, and business performance dashboards.
- Ability to read and interpret market trends, competitor offerings, and regulatory changes, and reflect them in product strategy.
Technical Expertise - Familiarity with cloud technologies and modern application architectures (APIs, microservices, containers).
- Solid understanding of data modelling, data flows, and analytics use cases in financial services.
- Ability to challenge and validate technical designs in the context of cost, complexity, and long-term product vision.
Leadership & Soft Skills - Strong communication and storytelling skills; able to translate technical concepts into clear, compelling narratives for non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong facilitation and negotiation skills; able to resolve conflicting priorities and drive consensus.
- High level of ownership, resilience, and accountability, with the ability to operate with limited supervision in a fast-moving environment.
- Collaborative, team-oriented mindset, comfortable working across multiple countries, cultures, and functions.
