About the Role
A leading international law firm is seeking an experienced manager to oversee billing and collections operations across its Asia offices. This role manages a team of billing professionals and works closely with partners to drive the revenue cycle—from WIP management through to final collection. This role will require a Mandarin speaker with at least a few years people management experience.
Summary of the role and key responsibilities
- Supervise the end-to-end billing and collections process for the Asia region
- Manage complex billing arrangements, including multi-jurisdictional tax applications (withholding tax, GST/VAT)
- Work directly with partners to review WIP, resolve billing issues, and drive collections
- Prepare and review client bills, write-offs, transfers, and retainer applications in compliance with firm policies
- Monitor accounts receivable aging and implement collection strategies to minimize DSO
- Ensure compliance with the regulations from the Law Society of Hong Kong
- Maintain awareness of Anti-Money Laundering regulations as they relate to client accounting
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of billing coordinators across multiple Asia offices
- Set performance goals, conduct reviews, and address performance issues
- Foster strong working relationships between the finance team and the partners
- Maintain and optimize workflows within the firm's practice management system
- Collaborate with regional and global finance teams to align processes and reporting
- Identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and implement procedural changes
Requirements
- Minimum 8 years of relevant experience within an international law firm
- At least 5 years in a supervisory or managerial role, with demonstrated success in leading teams and managing partner relationships
- Proficiency with practice management system and advanced MS Excel skills
- Strong knowledge of billing processes, collections strategies, and client account analysis in a law firm environment
- Familiarity with the Solicitors' Accounts Rules of the Law Society of Hong Kong understanding of tax applications (withholding tax, VAT/GST) across Asia Pacific jurisdictions
- Fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin (written and spoken)
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
- Must possess the right to work in Hong Kong
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills—able to influence and build credibility with partners
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure
- Discretion and sound judgment when handling sensitive matters
