Found LOVEBIRD - Please help!

Today we got a surprise when a lovebird flew into our flat in Sai Kung. Though our cats quickly cornered it, we managed to rescue it without any injury to the bird.

It is a beautiful, healthy, calm and tame little bird that has been remarkably unfazed by all the chaos going on around it. It is/was obviously someone's well-socialized pet that was looking for its home.

We have purchased a cage, food, etc. for it while we look for an adopter as we can not keep it. We have 4 cats who are just waiting for us to let down our guard so they can get to the bird. This really is not a safe environment for the poor bird at all. We're very concerned.

The SPCA will only transfer the bird directly to the AFCD (a death sentence for the little guy/girl), so we are desperately looking for anyone who wants to adopt it. The local pet shops (Sai Kung) also will not help. We don't want to kill the little lovebird, just find it a home with one of Hong Kong's bird lovers.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Deliran, please call me on 62363708 anytime. My children grew up with an Amazon parrot. Over the last 12 years we have rescued and released anything from Crested Bubbuls (my personal favorite) to wood pidgeons. I would be happy to help in anyway.

Kenko. My parrot was free ranged. He had the run of the apartment and the adjacent trees around my home. Our cat grew up with him and he would give as good as he would get. They eventually settled on opposite ends of the bed and accepted each others company. However, in the case of the Bulbul, they would fight over the possession of my soul with the parrot on my shoulder and the Bulbul on my head. Your parrot may be territorial (this will vary according to species and according to the nature of your parrot). I have had this problem with a African Grey 2 years ago so care and time will have to be ingredients with which to experiment. It is always important a parrot has his or her own person, or a mate. Same specis does not guarantee compatibility. The lovebird will require smaller sized feed. There is only one specialist for birds in HK, Dr. "Tiger" at the Taipo clinic.

I hope this is of some use for now, call me tomorrow.

Kenko: Here is a link that has quite a bit of information on food/behaviour, etc http://www.thatpetplace.com/lovebirds-article

It sounds like most parrots would eat the same thing, but they all need fruits/vegetables in addition to the seeds in regular bird food. I'm not sure if a lovebird can stay together or not. Lovebirds are a kind of parrot, but they may be aggressive if they don't get along with the other bird, so it's probably good for it to be in its own cage until you could discover this (at least this is what I've been reading on the internet - perhaps we should ask Dr. Tiger referred to above).

Bepo: Thank you for all the information. We will call you today.

I'll breathe easier once we can get the little 'fellow' out of this house and away from our cats.
