Does anyone know of any beaches on HK Island where we can take dogs? I hear that there is one in Stanley?

Not true. I know of two public beaches where dogs run around (mine included).

To address Sad sack - Dogs are not banned on beaches in Aus or the UK so I don't see why they should be banned in Hong Kong. As for bad people, well there are bad drivers that knock people down but we don't ban all cars from the roads.


Seems such a shame that Hong Kong has this law that penalizes honest good dog owners of which there are many.

I've just read that article and I noticed there was the word "may" stated often, which suggests there's no proof that people become ill. "We believe" was also stated. Dogs which are innoculated, in other words are healthy pose no risk to humans.

Thanks for the support devon - Sad Sack, I pity you for not liking dogs. The simple fact that you have not (or should I say cannot address) is that places in the UK amongst many others happily let people take their dogs onto the beach. So why not HK?


There is no health risk - The ocean takes a lot away, and so many people are responsible by cleaning up their dogs mess. We like the beach too!

Feces is feces. It's pretty toxic no matter how inoculated the dog. As for the risk to kids, I don't know.

You can take your dog to Big Wave Bay or Sheko in Winter when their is no life guard on.

i love dogs and i love beaches and i love it even more when they are MY dogs on MY beach. yep i am lucky. My dogs dont use the beach as their loo at all. They are my shadows and follow me everywhere in HK. They are the dogs who have trekked the most and traipsed over practically every hiking trail.

came across this thread a little late. I found some information about dog beaches though...someone recommended Sai Sha beach, part of the water sports park. It is a man made beach. Apparently dogs are allowed. Does anyone know about this?

Wtih Big Wave bay or Sheko, are dogs allowed in winter or is it just because no one is watching?

Dogs are not allowed on Public Beaches.


It is a shame that there are a few dog owners that spoil it for the rest of us and do not clean up after their animals. I regularly walk my dog and witness owners who appear to be oblivious to their dogs mess. These owners rather than their dogs pose a health danger to children on beaches for not clearing up their dogs. Dog mess can pose all sorts of health risks and blindness in children. I agree with Sad Sack - once all owners become responsible for their dogs then things may change....

Dogs are in fact not allowed on any HK beaches. Those listed beaches in this thread included. Could you take your dog there? Sure. Are you actually allowed? No.


I am all for smokers' rights, dogs' rights, drivers' rights!

I am going to write a guide on Hong Kong for Dogs! Thanks for all the feedback.


Its interesting that NO-ONE on this forum can answer why it is only HK that bans dogs from beaches. Clearly it is not an issue about dog mess.


Anyway. the best beaches are Sheck O (not sure on the spelling!) which is limited to early mornings or winter. Far better is Stanley.


At Stanley, when you get to the right turn to the market, instead following the road and take the first left - You will see down the hill the windsurfers beach. Your dogs can run there or as you get to the beach turn right and go through the blue gates and there is a small beach that you can use.

Hi Ali,

I am not sure exactly why dogs are banned on HK beaches, but believe it would be a combination of potential dog 'mess', and that simply the presence/actions of dogs potentially impacts on others enjoying the beach. Will they? Maybe not; but they could... Many dogs are well-mannered and friendly, many can be easily controlled by their owners, etc, but certainly some could conceivably be running wild, or would be let off their leads and would then get into some sort of perceived mischief or enter the space of others in an unwanted fashion.


I can certainly understand the joy in taking the dog to the beach for both owner and pet, but not everyone is a 'dog person'... although a minority I am sure, some people are very afraid of dogs - particularly unknown, unleashed ones! Again, a minority I am sure.


I guess, all things being equal, it is simply an acknowledgment that, like bicycles and kites and the like in public parks, dogs should not be allowed on the beach - something which is hard to take as a pet owner...

There are places in HK where you can take your dog for walk why break the rules? Its not as if your dog will need endless hours with Dr Phil to recover if it doesn't go the beach. Especially for expats who are guests in the country it's arrogant and disrespectful to disregard the rules whether you think the are stupid or not. Having grown up on Sydneys Northern beaches I can tell you not all beaches in Australia allow dogs in fact a lot of popular swimming beaches don't. We are lucky in Australia to have a large coastline so we can make room for all types of beach activities. HK doesn't so they made rules in accordance. Just like smokers can't light up anywhere they want dogs can't wander anywhere they want, fair or no fair. We have dog in our family and both family and dog are sucking it up just fine.

Er.... what about "local" people disregarding the rules?? The "guests" more than likely pay taxes and are NEEDED to do the job because they have the skills/expertise to do so. But that's digressing....


The way I see it is if the rules are not enforced (signs are a waste of time. I see signs ignored on a daily basis ie: dogs not allowed and dogs go there all the time)

then may as well take the signs down. No good comparing Australia to HK, completely different country and rules.

Agree...every country is different. The only problem we're having is that we don't want to do the wrong thing. I want to enjoy taking my dog for a walk on the beach and not upset anyone or get confronted by authorities...doesn't make for a relaxing walk.

It would be great if there was just one beach that was a dog beach...advertised as such so it was clear to all.

Ali, look forward to your guide book...could really use it. maybe a website too. be happy to help out in any way.

Thank you JenV, Connie, MisterD (and others!!) - I was getting so depressed that Hong Kong is so dog unfriendly and so many people seem to support that view.


Clearly form the responses that is not the case!!


I am working on a dog guide, I will of course post it here and I look forward to seeing you guys and the dogs very soon!

I take my two to a beach In Shek O, there is a 'no dogs' sign but it's not really a sun bathing beach so many people take their pups there for a run and nobody complains, is nice as there is a little outdoor bar/seating area also on beach so you can enjoy.....

I'm a dog owner in Hong Kong (have 2 small dogs) and have been also looking for a place to walk my dogs in Hong Kong, to this end it's pretty difficult,especially with regard to beaches. I come from Europe and where I live dogs are not banned on beaches, neither are the majority of things you can't do in HK public spaces banned ...and people there still seem to live happily and safely.

I think it's a really sad situation in Hong Kong that everywhere you go there are absurd lits of things you can't do, 'No Dogs Allowed', featuring hugely on this list.

After 2 years here I can't help but notice what unhealthy attitudes people here have towards animals (in this case dogs). I do understand it's important to clean up after ones dog no matter where you live. But, it's also important to clean up after yourself, drive safely, be polite to others in public spaces...hmmm things which are, lacking in Hong Kong. Many times now in HK I have been harrased by locals about cleaning up my dogs 'business' on the steet, when I am, paper in hand etc doing my job and being a good citizen??!!! I wonder is it my Western face that has prompted this harrasment?

It's a really crazy situation here, but people just love to complain and look for someone to blame, be that for dog poop on the steets or whatever.HK is a clean albeit extremely polluted city. This crazy policy of a million things being not allowed needs to stop, it's insane and just plain unfriendly. I'm sorry to say but the earlier post from 'Sad Sack' epitomises this pious Hong Kong attitude-'lets look for someone to pick on and something to panic about'. Of course everyone should clean up after themselves and be responsinble human beings. But,germs are germs and they're everywhere! Paranoia about the animal world does nothing to stop this and fosters really unhealthy attittudes towards our furry friends. Living in a busy neighbourhood in HK I see all kinds of waste (blood from meat etc) being poured onto the streets from various shops/stalls - washed away with water but surely not healthy? No one seems to panic about this though. Ditto, to wet markets crammed full with dead and live animals side by side. How about just generally bady ventilated schools, classrooms etc?

I think my point is clear, dogs are not rabid disease bearing beasts, Hong Kongers need to exercise some pragmatism and intelligence on this issue. As for the earlier post by Sad Sack that mentioned children putting sand in their mouths on the beaches - how about parents act responsibly and watch their kids. To be honest children will be children and generally put everything in their mouths so they need to be closely monitored!

At heart I think Hong Kong needs to get down of it's 'superior' pedestal and become a more tolerant, dare I say freindly and welcoming place for not only dog owners but everyone. In the meantime I planning to move back to somewhere a lot 'freindlier'. ;-)

Agree 100% and welcome to Hong Kong!


What sadsack says is I'm afraid true. People in HK worry about dogs crapping on the beach and yet look out over the harbor and see only pollution as a good thing.


Will this attitude change? I doubt it unless Singapore becomes more dog friendly and then we'll see action.


But some good news, the dog guide for HK moves forward and it will be out (I hope!) by the summer.

Agreed with the above posters about the odd attitude many have towards dogs. I find it particularly interesting that when my dog was a small puppy, only 5-6 kilos or so, there would still be people of all ages who would stare wide-eyed in fear and back away quickly. Some people even whimper.


After half a year with my dog, I have found the following around Repulse Bay/Stanley:

- There is a very small beach (more like a strip of sand) on the Promenade between Repulse Bay and Deep Water Bay. Lots of dogs swim and play there.

- Shek O (main beach) and Big Wave have dogs in winter when no guards are around. It is against the rules technically but there never seems to be an issue.

- Lots and lots of hiking trails, for example the various catchwaters and the trails in Tai Tam Country Park. Like many other dog owners, I let mine run off leash. on the trails.

- You can take the Lamma ferry and do the family walk with your dog off leash.

Looking forward to that guide to where to walk dogs in Hk and good suggestions from axptguy. Glad that I hadn't imagined the crap attitude towards dogs here, saddened it exists though.

I too have had people jump back from my super cute, super small pugs and people in my building have even screamed a few times as I've gotten out of the lift with them! Insane, I just laugh when this happens! I think the screaming, wincing, wimpering must be a learned behaviour/reaction because it certainly isn't rational!

I'm scared of plenty of things but certainly don't react like that...and surely killer snakes and huge spiders are scarier than cute dogs??!!! ;-)

It is definitely learned. Notice how many mothers shield their kids with their bodies as they walk past dogs. The message seems to be "careful, he might bite you", as if that is a dog's default behavior.

Dear Ali,

I know of a great dog beach and easy to get to in HK island, but i wont put it on here in case Sad Sack (great name for you) and Axptguy find out and try to stop it being a dog beach.

When parents stop letting their kids crap and pee on the beach, i will then worry about their responses. Some of the kids on HK beaches are disgusting, well not them i guess, but their parents !!!!!!!

And i should mention, that neither me or my dogs want to eat/drink kid crap, but are made to all the time, cause its "cute"

I have dogs and I would like to see more beaches open for dogs. I am fine that dog beaches are sperate from main beaches or dog beach only area. But, we need to have these. In HK, the summer time is long and we can't really take the dog to hike in the hot summer time.


For those do not like the idea of dog beaches, I means kidds soil the beach all the time. Kids and elderly soild the beach water all the time. So, we are fine with human stuff but not dogs.


Kidds run into people all the time when they play. They knock off others all the time. So, these are all fien but not dogs, even the tiny ones. I mean I have enough of this.
