Why do people have their dogs dew claws removed? Is it really necessary?

Dew claws can be a nuisance. As long as you keep them as short as possible then they tend not to catch on things. My dog had a visit to the vet because he'd ripped his and it bled quite a bit. The vet clipped it back very short and I've kept them short ever since and haven't had a problem. I don't think it's necessary to have them removed.
