Good Pet Doctor in HK

Not to disagree Cara, since I agree with your point, but where do you think all those dogs at the SPCA, HKDR, etc. come from? Sure, some may be imported by expats, but I bet the overwhelming majority come from pet stores and puppy mills. So the OP might as well go straight to the source! (just kidding!)

True, there are pure bred dogs at the rescue shelters and those most certainly came from pet shops. But majority of animals up for adoption for example from SPCA (check their website) are "multi-breed" mongrels. Which in my mind are much more attractive as they more closely resemble a real dog, instead of something bred to have excessively short/long legs, noses or ears or bulging eyes etc...

There are statistics available for the huge percentage of puppies that are sick and die within days of being purchased from a pet shop. And those who do not die, usually incur a huge veterinarian bill for the owner - who is then often shrieking from the responsibility and abandons the animal to fend for itself in the streets.

So OP, I go with Cara and put my money on the dog already being seriously ill when you bought it from the pet shop. The vaccination had nothing to do with it passing away. Too bad it was too late to help the poor pup.

Totally agree with Cara, she has it spot on. Adopting a breed dog from a shelter is not helping to fuel the supply from pet shops, anymore than letting that dog be put down because it's been abandoned would help stem the supply.

The dogs in pet shops here come from breeders that are just interested in profit. Any breeder who cared about the animals would not allow them to be put on sale in such conditions. Good breeders want to choose the homes their animals go to, and will not let them go until they are 13 weeks old and fully vaccinated. They would not abandon them to be put in an environment where they get inadequate care and are sold to someone who may have little clue about their needs, think they are buying a cute toy and quickly dump it when they realise it's a complex creature with complex needs.

If you buy from pet shops, you are part of the problem not part of the solution.

Dr David of Creature Comforts for housecall visits is for me still the best. If you want cheaper rates, he has a 24 animal hospital at East Island, consultation is only HK$200. The best vet there is Dr Damien.

Good information for me as well as I am in need of a vet myself. My dog is arriving in less than three weeks from the U.S. (she's been with me for over 9 years.) Having just arrived myself I've been unable to find many good resources for her. The vet was on my list of urgent to do's, and I have posted a thread about dog care needs as well. Please do respond to that if you know of any. This has been very difficult to find.

I was involved with the SPCA many years ago and it was heart breaking to see/hear of cases that had come from puppy mills > pet shops. They are very poorly regulated in HK & should be avoided at all costs. There are so many animals looking for homes right here, it is not fair to buy them - from anywhere, including overseas.
