Dog friendly neighbourhood

Does anyone know which districts or buildings are dog friendly?

I've had enough unfriendly comments from some neighbors, guard & pedestrians. My dogs (German Shepherd) don't bark or cause unnecessary nuisance. Whenever I see pedestrians, my 2 dogs & I always stand aside quietly to let people pass.

One day as I walked along a pedestrian walkway, a lady from afar literally scolded me as she tried to avoid us. We stood still at the time almost 3m from her. She jumped from the walkway to the busy road where cars horned at her. I could comprehend their fear but we do walk quietly & always behave well in public.

Can someone suggest a dog friendly community esp for larger breeds? I've rented an apartment & didn't know the problems that came along with it. Now planning to move.

Happy Valley is the best, most of the people there keep pets, and most of them have more than one dog, 7-Eleven, Circle K, Mannings, some banks and restaurants allow your dogs to go in, people are extremely friendly to dogs, most of the buildings there allow you to keep dogs, and of course, before you rent a flat, do check clearly with the management office, me and my 7 dogs live so happily in Happy Valley, let me know if you need more infomration, thanks

Thanks Cara and Joe. I'm almost on the verge of giving up my dogs cos of these unfriendly comments. I moved from a house to an apartment (due to high rent of course) and that's been a big change to us and the dogs. Many landlords do not prefer renting to dog owners which makes the task of home hunting more difficult.

One lady freaked out when she saw me about to take the lift with 2 dogs. I obviously took the stairs instead. I feel like I'm holding a dinosaur and not German Shepherd. Sigh.....

Joe, are your dogs big or small breeds? It sounds like you do have a dog friendly community there which I hope the rent is under 25 K?

It was lucky that this landlord has 2 dogs too and was within our budget.

I agree Happy Valley is the best if you want to live close to town. And there's a dog park so your dogs can still run around freely and socialise with other dogs. It used to drive me crazy when I see those dog unfriendly people on the street, now I just ignored them.

Ma On Shan is a very friendly area, you have neighborhood dog gardens and a very long Promenade where you can go for walks. I also have a big dog and yes some people are afraid of her but its normal.

Hi ECLife,

i have one English Cocker Spaniel and five poodles, three of them are teacup poodles, so no need to walk, my neighbours never scar of my dogs when they saw them at the lift lobby area, security guard is also very friendly, dont give up your dogs, it's not fair to them, try Happy Valley, you will feel the difference

Yes, totally agree even small dogs need to go out and mix with other small dogs. They are social animals so they all need to go out and have a good old sniff, sniff, sniff around and meet up with their little friends. North Point is another good area for dogs to live. I walk my dogs from North Point up the hill to Braemar Hill and from there you can pick up on many different hiking trails. You can hike all the way to Parkview ( Tai Tam ) In North Point you can still find many old buildings. The place I life in doesn't have anything at all in the deeds regarding keeping pets. But you do need to check out the deeds before you rent or buy a place here in HK. North Point has a dog park right on the waterfront and the Quarry Bay's " Pet Garden " has just opened too. Good luck house hunting - Please don't give up your dog due to the BS people are giving you.

I will put in another good word for Discovery Bay. Really, it is very convenient to Central with the 20 minute ferry ride, and you can get a three bedroom flat for 25k. I have two standard poodles (both over 30kg) and there are occasional negative reactions from people, but people who are afraid of them have plenty of space to cross the road without traffic. I have been happy there while working on HK island, and am only relocating to Sai Kung due to a change in work.

Just a thought, one woman who was terrified of my dogs lost that fear when she saw one of them wearing little red boots while he had a paw injury that was healing. She used to gasp or scream EVERY TIME she saw them for almost 6 months but now she waves and smiles. Have you though about putting big pink bows or something else ridiculous on them before heading out for walks? ;-)

Thanks all for the useful suggestions & feel so much better after reading them. I'll definitely try putting some cute accessories on these 30+kg German Shepherds. That will be fun!

My German Shepherds need a garden & now that I have a nice helper I can focus on hunting for a house under 25 K. Problem is I work in Central & my husband works at Tsuen Wan. We both drive to work. The mid-point seems to be Shatin, TaiPo. But thanks again to everyone for the kind suggestions!

Take a look at Symphony Bay, near Ma On Shan. Huge shared garden, lots of dog owners, big and small dogs, people are used to dogs, great places to walk to.

Fairview Park has busses to Central 30 minutes and to Tsuen Wan 20 minutes save on driving and parking. $18k gets a good sized house 850 sqft with garden. $25k gets a bigger house1300 sqft or 1050 sqft with garden. Lots of dogs around so your dog can socialise when on walks

Where is good to walk dogs near fvp 190k? I am moving there and noticed that although we have a nice garden there is no place to let the dogs run free?

@EClife

Hey ,We are the dog owner too , we moved here from Germany 5 months ago along with our 5 year old Golden Retriever .

First of all , dont never and ever give up your dogs due to any reasons, the dogs are family !

Second of all , just dont give a F*** what the other people think or say as long as we do behave nicely in the public .

We live in TungChung Caribbean Coast , we live in a normal apartment . but if your budget is 25k , you could get a double units , its really big . This complex is well known due to the pet friendly policy and the people around here are used to the different size dogs ...True , no garden , but in the complex there are few parks or playground areas , in the day you would see many dog owners take their dogs to play over there , and the dogs socialize with each other happily. and the most important , it is safe and secure here !

Wish you the best with your dogs and good luck !

Dan88 go out to Nam Sang Wai at the end of the road there is a huge area people let their dogs run free. You can also stroll through the fish farms at Tai sang wai, but keep a leash as village dogs can be aggressive in protecting their property. You can also Yau Pok Road by the entrance to FVP is closed to traffic
