Can anyone confirm for me if dogs are allowed on the ferries to Lantau? I've heard that some small dogs are 'smuggled' in bags, but I don't think that will work for a golden retriever!
Will the slow/cargo ferry take them?
Or any other options to get them to Lantau?

You can take dogs on the slow ferries to Mui Wo but not the fast ferries. You need a muzzle for them but you only need it on as you go through the turnstile, on the ferry it's not enforced but of course you need to make sure your dog is not bothering the other passengers.
Dogs can go on all ferries to DB, same rule applies for the muzzle and you need to fill in a form with dog licence details.
Good luck, should be fairly straightforward.
As Doodah says you can also hire a van, if you don't speak Cantonese best to ask a Cantonese speaker to help.

ferry to Lamma island now only have fast ferries, now dogs can stay inside the aircond area, unlike before, we pay extra money for our lovely doggies but need to sit at the back of the ferry with NO aircond, plus suffer from the bad smell from the oil from the ferry
