we are hiring a dog walker/pet sitter for our 1 year old dog who is friendly and sociable. we have two finalists. as first time dog owners, what should we look for to ensure that we are hiring the competent handler? would a test of observing the handler walking the dog from a distance sufficient? (and of course looking out for the dog's reaction and body language). ideas appreciated.

Find someone who already has their own dog, rather than the Icky Vicky version who frogmarches your pet for the minimum required time to collect your money. I've seen too many of these. Look out for neighbours with dogs with children who really love dogs. The rapport between child and dog , &, dog and dog. The children will love the extra pocket money and the dogs will have a great time.
