Pet Boarding Places/Hotels

The most common reason for a dog to lose weight in a boarding kennel environment is stress. Obviously a dog will lose weight if exercised more than the owner gives it, but stress is the number one reason a dog loses weight in kennels. Some dogs just cannot cope with heightened noise levels (barking) and lots of dogs in their immediate environment regardless of whether the dog is in a separate kennel or a community where the dogs can interact with each other.

I use Ferndale and they're brilliant! My dog ALWAYS looks a picture when I pick her up. Highly recommended.

My puppy did not like Ferndale at all. He looked very sad and subdued when he came back which was upsetting since he is a very happy/ independent dog. The cage is good sized, no complaints there but I feel its still a cage. No weight loss though.

I have used Dave Chan in Discovery Bay before and I still do. He is v.good but expensive. Its a home (apartment building) environment. My puppy did loose weight but its a new environment and he got to play all day/ all evening. I know from his grooming day out, how tired he is because he is so wired from being around other dogs and he loves it. If he were to be out everyday with company, he would loose weight no matter how much we feed him or (not) walk him because he is working/ playing way overtime with no mid-day naps!

For my puppy's Christmas vacation, I plan to leave him with Andrew @ DB Dog dayz. I have heard very highly of them and again my playful pup gets to play all day.

I would definitely recommend a home environment as the barking seems to be minimal (I bet neighbors would complain otherwise), all the dogs seem to hang out well with each other, play time is more and my puppy gets to socialize and learn some manners from older dogs on how to behave with other dogs!

I had my cat stay at Ferndale for 2 weeks. She came back considerably lighter, so much so that I had to take her to the vet to make sure she was OK. She also came back with fleas and for days was lethargic and upset.

With a cat I can assure you the weight loss was not due to exercise, but purely stress. The kennel had all my contact info and I was very upset that they did not contact me and keep me informed that she was doing so poorly. They also accused me of bringing the cat WITH fleas, which I did not.

I would not recommend Ferndale for any animal.

I've used Ferndale for many years and will be doing so again this year ... that speaks for itself.

Every dog owner must realise that putting their pet into kennels is not a holiday for them. They don't think "Yipee, I'm going on vaccation!" They think they are being abandoned and it's obviously going to be stressful for them. It doesn't matter how good the kennels are, your dog still won't be happy at the fact that you have left them, so it's nothing out of the ordinary when your dog returns home with a bit of a weight loss ... it's normal. So don't necessarily assume that your dog hasn't been properly looked after.

If I didn't think that my dog was being well cared for, I wouldn't have used the same kennels for years.

Well, I would guess having two dogs together for company would make it easier for them. But generally speaking, I'm not saying ALL dogs, but MOST dogs don't like being separated from their owners.

It all boils down to how well a dog is socialised and experience in it's early months of life (prior to 16 weeks) and environment. Dogs which are fearful or aggressive in certain situations were never habituated to the circumstance they feared, so the way they cope is to be fearful or aggressive. Dogs which are happy going to kennels have had a good experience there and are willing to go back even if it means leaving their owner.

i took my two dogs at Pet Parking in Tai Po and visited the place myself. the dogs are generally allowed to walk around, with several floors for different groups. the owner joyce also cooks fresh meals in the evenings. it is probably the cheapest option out there for $150/night/medium sized dog, and them not being in a kennel - more like a home. in terms of happiness, they seemed to do really well and i got regular photo updates of them playing and walking around on their album page.

i was not too happy that my feeding instructions (not to feed my dog kibble) was probably ignored judging from the constant itching poor Jenni displayed after i came back, and they were probably never taken out for walks (they said they took them out once or twice). also, they didn't have anyone accompany them on return, resulting in two very agitated dogs who'd been merely tethered to an unstable cart - who knows, they were probably being pushed around and squashed by it, so they chewed through their leashes and had only a small piece of lead attached to them by the time i opened the van door!

this was not a bad option nevertheless.. i guess i just can't expect someone else to treat them with the same care that i would! but at least they were safe and happy, and fed while I was gone.

Has anyone tried Posh Pets? I can't seem to find any reviews..

To cara:

This may be a little out of context, but... you seem to be very experienced. I have a few questions: We're going to Italy for 2 months this summer. We're actually thinking about bringing our toy poodle with us. Will it be too much for him? What would you rather do? Will leaving him 2 months in the kennel be too long?

Thanks so much....

I am looking for a place that will look after a pet tortoise for 2 weeks. All i can find seems to be places for dogs and cats. Are there any such facilities in Hong Kong?
