We will be moving to HK in Jan 06 and in the meantime will be looking for accomodation, etc. Now another important item on the to do list is to look out for pre-schools or playgroups (whatever there is) for my then almost 3.5 yrs old son. As looking for schools with good learning structure etc is really new for me, (like what should I expect for a 3 yr old?) I am quite at a lost as to where or how to start. I have been reading some of the past mails but it's just names popping out to me. So my fear is that I find a place to stay and realise that I have to travel long eventually just to get my son to 'school'.
Are there generally good preschools all around HK that I shouldn't really worry about where to look for our accomodation?
Thanks in advance

I have a 2 year old, and I have researched and talked to lots of moms.... in general, Kowloon Tong has the MOST choices of schools. Your son's age will be going to K1 here in HK. I gather you will be sending him to an international school? There in Kowloon Tong would have most choices.
There are some on HK island side. But more scattered. But to answer your question, no preschools (good and reputable ones) are NOT all over HK. Presently, I use the school bus that the school provides, expensive, but more convenient. So make sure the school you choose from will have a school bus service for you if you don't drive, or will live far away from the school's area.
Most international schools now teach Mandarin as mandatory subject for all students.

There are schools all around, but it really depends on what type of school you want to send your child to. For example, HK Island has a few ESF (English Schools Foundation) schools, but the school you go to is determined by where you live (they have "catchment" areas for each school).
One thing I have found in HK is that alot of international schools (including playgroups) are quite structured in their approach. This is very different to what I'm used to in Australia, where the approach is learning through play. So it's really difficult to recommend a type of school. You need to work out what you think suits you and your son best. And I would also suggest that you visit the schools before making a decision. (In fact, if possible you should also visit HK before moving here - to have a look around at places to live as well as schools.)
I'm pretty sure there also are a German School and French school on HK Island which you might consider.

There is a German Swiss International (GSIS) at The Peak which accepts children at their kindergarten from 3 years. I have a german friend who is very happy there, the hours are 9.15 - 12.30. You can look at their website on classmateasia.com. I have visited this school and if the company is paying and the fees are not a problem then it is a very nice environment, also has a bus service.

Hi,
I am going to Hong Kong for a six month business assignment next month.
I am planning to bring my 4 yr old son with me and have no idea about the school system in Hong Kong. Should he go to pre-K in Hong Kong? He speaks Mandarin and a little English and I would like to find school teaching both languages.
He will probably arrive in Hong Kong around end of September. When does the preschool in Hong Kong start? Will I be able to find a preschool for him in late September or should I apply beforehand?
I will work in Central and live in Happy Valley. Any advice on good preschools around these two areas for six months?
Many thanks for any advice.
