Teaching Credential

My wife is an American, working in Hong Kong. She's interested in getting a teaching credential that would allow her to teach in the U.S. at the primary-school level -- what's called a multiple-subject credential.

Does anyone know of ANY way -- through online courses, distance learning, or (gasp!) even locally -- that she could at least get started, working toward a teaching certificate?

She's already got Bachelors and Masters Degree. She just needs the credential. Obviously she have to do the student-teaching part probably in the U.S., I suppose? It's likely we'll be back in California next year, at least for a year or two.

One related question -- is a U.S. credential useful if she (or anyone) wants to teach in international schools? What kind of credentials to teachers at ESF schools generally have?

Any ideas, hints, rumors, or amused denials of the possibility are welcome.

she can try HKU to see what / how long their BEd would last and what credit she'd get for her current B and Masters. The other option would be to check HKIntstitute of Education ... but they're more local focussed. Wether any qualifications from HKU were accepted back in the States is likely at the disgression of the local / state board. it'll all likely depend on what her bachelor and Masters are in.

most (good) international schools hire teachers with at least a Bachelors of Edcuation, if not a Masters (at least from North America) ... not sure how that measures up to Uk/Aus. It should be similar in the ESF (ie minimum direct Bachelors of Ed or Masters of Ed)

With a batchelor's degree she doesn't need a BEd, just a PGDE (one yr, HKU/HKIEd).

George Mason University in Virginia has something called Fast Train and you can get teaching credentials online. That credential would allow you to teach at international schools. If you decided to move to California you would apply to get a teaching credential there and they would probably require another class or two to do it. That is a good one to get because most states recognize a CA credential. :) And International schools love a CA teacher because our credential authorizes us to teach grades K-8, that gives schools a lot of flexibility. I don't know of any CA universities offering online teaching credentials.

I believe that the PGDE offered here is only applicable and recognised here.

Also i have a friend who has a BA Ed in Childhood Studies and a Masters and then some and can become a Principal of a Primary SChool here BUT is not able to become a Principal of a Kindergarten here because her Masters from Columbia Uni is not comparative to the 'local QKT' how ridiculous is that!

A US credential would definitely be useful at an international school if it follows a US curriculum (like Hong Kong International School). ESF schools would look more favourably on credentials from the U.K.

hi, I am a teacher from California and if she wants to teach in California, I would advise to check with the Sacramento Board of Education. Since getting a teaching credential in CA has become such a pain. Have you tried any of the state schools for an online program? I am not sure which and if any of them offer a full online program, but look up Cal state Fullerton, Donminguez hills, Long Beach state and maybe National university? The last may be more expensive, but I am not sure.

good luck. Also, I doubt that any of the programs in HK would transfer....
