Looking for any advice on what are the chances for ESF children getting admissions into HK universities ????

Would love to hear from a range of experiences if any would like to share ,as very soon my child will be ready and we would like to choose HK as opposed to anywhere else .

Thanks everyone who can spare few thoughts/ advice on this rather complicated issue .

I would think it depends which department you are applying to. Many of the programs are in English, but there are many more options if your child speaks Cantonese. Perhaps you can get ahold of the admissions departments and meet with them to discuss.

With the changing demographics at ESF, more kids are staying in HK and attending HK universities. Last year about 11%. HKU, Chinese U and HKSTU are the most popular for the ESF kids. As long as the student meets the course requirement, they are quite readily accepted. Many students are admitted to the medical, legal, business and science programmes. If the programme requires Chinese, they will need to establish their level so English programmes are usually the preferred route.

Is it correct to assume that it is the top students from ESF that are getting into the local universities like HKU, CU and HKSTU? What about the average student?

Top ESF graduates are supposed to go to top US and UK universities instead of local universities in HK.

That is what my problem is too , cannot gauge what is the criteria for selecting local students from ESF , into local universities .

The number of children opting for local universities is increasing , I am told

Over 95% of ESF grads go onto University. Where they choose to attend depends on their background and their course of study. Students who choose HK are often accepted at top UK and USA schools (and others), but decide that HK is the best option for them. It could be because of finances..... you really can't beat the cost of HK.... or because they want to study medicine and don't want to do the 12 year study route in the USA, and would have to pay international tuition in the UK.

It is very difficult to define "top" since the "average" results from ESF are far superior to the "average" results from local schools. Therefore, most ESF students have an option of choosing university in HK if this is their choice.

With 11% of the students choosing local universities, and even some choosing China, it is wrong to say that students are "supposed" to attend school in the US and UK. The ESF will support the University admissions process regardless of destination. Schools from HK, UK, USA, Canada, Australia etc all interview at the ESF. Kids really have choice. 07/08 ESF University destination stats are as follows:

46% UK

18% USA

16% Canada

11% HK

7% Australia

2% Other

ltxhk - wondering.... where did you get your statistics from?

All just released from ESF via their news to parents. The stats are for all secondary schools combined. Every secondary will have some differences depending on the students' backgrounds.

As for exam results, they are published every year and consistently ESF scores within the 90% for selective UK schools (rather than just public).

He has not much confident although he is a very bright boy. What is his chances of getting into HKUST. Any info appreciated
