There are very few native speaking kids there- it's known as a school that will take kids with any level of English. Student body is predominantly local, Japanese, Korean, Indian. The 2 kids I know there came from Japan without a word of English & got thrown in the deep end- it's been good for them but I think native speakers would be bored - and possibly isolated!

I have been shown around this school and agree with the previous comment. If you are a native english speaker I would look elsewhere. Where will you be located in Hong Kong?

We are located on Kowloon side. So besides the esf schools we do not have another American system.

Many find AIS to be "American" in name and nothing else. English levels are on the low side for HK international schools, and this does effect the classroom and learning.

Your kids are only in primary school. There is not a significant difference between ESF and the American system in primary. Both focus on reading, writing, mathematics and enquiry based learning for science/history/ general. Many Americans and Canadians attend the ESF schools, and easily and successfully transfer back to North America.

Even on HK side, you will find about 60% of the American primary kids at HKIS, however, the other 40% attend a wide range of schools (not American) including ESF. Take a look at all your options in person before deciding.

Don't look for an "American" based school.... in HK, good luck.

As long as it is a GOOD school, that's what's important.

If you are on the Kowloon side, don't wish to travel over to HK island side, in my opinion these are the better/popular International School on Kowloon/and New Territories:

1) Renaissance College

2) Shatin College

3) Australian Int'l School

4) Kowloon Junior

5) beacon hill

6) Kingston

For Secondary:

1) King George V

2) Australian

For the REALLY top brand int'l schools in all of HK:

1) HKIS

2) CIS

3) GSIS

4) SIS

5) CDNIS

For the international schools style, but with MUCH more emphasis on Chinese learning:

1) ISF

2) PLKCKY

3) KCIS

4) Victoria

5) Creative

Schools that take any students with $:

American, and Yew Chung.

Where does JIS fit on your list Katetam?

I think JIS is put on the list with NIS and HLY ... that is in Tai Po and regularly forgotten. I think Katelam's list was focused on the Kowloon area and not so much on the greater NT.

Although all of these are great schools with 'real' international values, and well worth the commute.

I agree with you Bexly - and at the risk of letting the secret out - JIS is a great little school - not well known and maybe it is better that way!!

I would revise the list below:

For the REALLY top brand int'l schools in all of HK:

1) HKIS

2) CIS

3) GSIS

4) SIS

5) CDNIS

to:

For the REALLY top brand int'l schools in all of HK:

1) CIS

2) HKIS

3) GSIS

4) IS

5) Li Po Chun (Actually this is probably the best of all of them, but is a boarding school and highly competitive)

Obviously add DBS and DGS into the top 5 if you're dealing with all schools in HK.

A little addition to feedback on AIS Kowloon Tong, from personal experience.

The interview process looks like this:

A single kid is take to the back room alone by the reception girl (not native speaker), who provides him with reading/writing/math tests and runs a comprehension part, too. Yes, student reception interview (read: test) is run by a non-teaching staff. How does that sound? So happy we didn't pass it!

My Personal Experience: American International School offers a family friendly and small community for students to attend and receive an outstanding education. Their primary school is moving to the common core standards and their high school uses the rigorous carnegie credit system. Students and parents appreciate and highly value the healthy, welcoming and strong character development across the school. Graduation rates and university matriculation to the best and brightest universities in the USA is nearly 100% with students remaining connected to the school and each other long after they leave. AIS is a fairly new school with a brand new Elementary campus. Principals, administrators and teachers are personable, caring and effective. Give them a call for a campus tour and interview today.

Great to hear another side of the story regarding American International School HK (AIS). My boy is now at EC1 (equivalent to K1) and he pretty much loves schooling. This is of uppermost importance for a small kid to start off, to my mind.

In the course of the campus tour, I have chatted with a group of boys and another few girls. They all love studying in AIS. This really adds weights prior to my final decision at that time when my boy had choices.
